HD Upgrade Hookup to Neighbors dish?

1354 Views 17 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Pendarus
Hi!

I finally gave in and DTV is coming out to replace my HD Tivo with a HR21. I have the old 3 LNB dish on the common chimmney, and 3 feet away is my Neighbors AU9s dish.

My HMA will not let us install any dish that requires drilling. How my neighbors got away with it I don't know. Can the installer hookup a WB68 and conect me to my neighbors dish? I assume the installer will jump at the chance to get out of all the work installing the new dish.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Yes
You're buddies with your neighbor, right?

Check out his signal strengths. Here's a chance for a free tune up if the installer gets to just share the existing dish.
By HMA, I assume you mean homeowner's association? If you indeed own the home there should be nothing keeping you from putting up a dish on your own roof. Homeowner's associations are typically not well-versed in the rules.

The key here is determining if you own the roof or the HOA does.

Best of luck to you.
Personally, I think I'd want my own dish...

I could imagine a lot of headaches with a common dish, but then again, no personal experience.

They own the roof. Your only allowed to mount a dish with straps to the chimmeny. The AU9s requires drilling which is a no-no. My neighbors dish has been up about 6-8 months and is drilled into the chimmeny, how they got away with that is a mystery to me.

I had to seperate my DTV installer and a neighbor (from a building across the complex)that were screaming at each other in my foyer when I moved in. The neighbor was upset that I had not applied to the association for permission to have a new dish installed. How he knew I had applied or not is a mystery. Problem was the dish was there from the previous owner, I was just having extra lines run to my bedroom. He saw the DTV guy and started yelling at him to get of the roof, that he was tresspassing and would call the cops. So I want the installer on the roof as little as possible.

Will the install have a WB68 on his truck? Should I pick one up just incase?

Thanks!

The installer will probably have a multiswitch on the truck - I understand that the larger ones need prior approval but that one shouldn't. I'd call ahead to make sure they bring one.

I'm curious - can't the installer put up the dish in the location of the current dish and use the existing mount/holes (or at least say he used the same holes) - the management company wouldn't know any different unless they sent someone up there to inspect the work... which ain't happening.
That is why I would never live somewhere with Homeowners association!

Good luck with your install!:)

You are allowed to read the rules before living there you know? Not all HOA's are the same.

I'd never live somewhere without one, although last time I bought a house I passed on two properties because of some of the wording in the HOA.
Okay, let's not allow this thread to degrade into another HOA debate - there's plenty of those around here. The OP was looking for help with his issue, not a debate on the merits of HOAs, so let's help him.

Any chance that mount-point can be reused?
Question is about can he share his neighbor's AU9. Answer was yes. Use a WB68 and get four line each.

Then get rid of old 3 LNB dish. Would look better with one dish on chimmney than two. Of course, some would argue about any dish up there, but they need to go get their own forum, not welcome here.

The first installer that got into it with the neighbor tried to talk me into the new dish with the DTV DVR. He said the new dish was too heavy for the straps and he needed to put anchors in the maisonary. I can see the dish my neighbors have and it is bolted into the chimmney(?spelling?). So I assume what he told me is correct.

We will see what happens tomorrow. I hope the guy they send is better than the first 3 guys that came out the first time.

1. Came out re-ran alot of cable inside, did a great job, but spoke no english and did not have a dish on his truck. I did not need the dish, but the language barrier stoped me from communicating this.

2. Came out ran lines outside to hookup the bedroom, got in a fight with my neighbor. Did not check the signal before he left. Reception horrible.

3. Came out forgot ladder.

4. Two kids in a DTV truck. Re-did EVERYTHING! Re-pointed dish. Were done in twenty minutes, have not had a problem since.

I hope they send the kids again!

That's what I was thinking. Cut down on the clutter on the roof.
Well the installer was in agreement with me, but his supervisor would not let him have a switch to do the hookup.

I am about to call the install company and chew some butt.

Tell them you either want a WB616, or 2 WB68's.

Good Luck :)
Answer for hooking up to neighbor's dish is yes as long as your neighbor gives permission for it. Secondly, if there is enough line of sight the installer can mount the dish using a pole mount or tripod, although that would be an extra charge negotiated with the technician. That's all I've got, I rent :D
I talked to DTV and the CSR was way cool! He agreed I can hookup to the other dish, he suggested I pickup a switch and he rescheduled the install. He added notes about installing customer provided switch to the work order. I found one one Ebay for $20.00.

Later the install company called and apologized and wanted to have a supervisior come out tomorrow and do the install. I can't be available till Monday, so they put me on as the first install in the morning.
