As posted in another thread, I recently purchased my first HDTV and am looking at upgrading my DirecTV service. Do they have any specials for first time upgraders?

I've looked on DirecTV's website and basically all I saw was $9.99/month for HD service. I think I saw $199 for an HD DVR upgrade which is a real bummer. I saw what channels would be offered in HD. Besides those little tidbits I didn't see much regarding a SD user upgrading to an HD user. Can you negotiate with the satellite company? Like I said, I haven't found much on specials and such for current customers looking to upgrade. Any suggestions, tips, or assistance is greatly appreciated. TIA :)

A friend of mine has SD DVR service and was interested in HD. He came to me and ask me about HD since I have HD DVR service. He brought a ad that he got in the mail. It was a DISH NETWORK flyer from a authorized dealer. They had a offer for a free HD DVR, 3 months of free HBO, and STARZ, a free $50 gas voucher and 1 year of TV guide.

I called them told them that dish network had this offer and asked if Directv had any offer that they could offer.
I didnt mention the gas voucher or the tv guide however.
They said they could offer the same. They offered a free HD DVR and free HBO and STARZ.
Also gave a free year of DVR SERVICE.

Thanks for the advice. One thing I am afraid of is that I have only been a DirecTV customer for a little over a year. If I read my contract right, I am out of the contract on my three standard receivers but am under contract for an additional 9 month on one of my receivers due to it being a DVR.

Will my length of time with the company negatively affect my ability to get a good deal? One thing I noticed in DirecTV's ad's is that an HD-DVR is going to cost $199 plus installation fees and HD packages per month. $200 seems a little steep to me, especially in this economy and time of uncertainty. Am I screwed out of a good deal or is there still a chance?

BTW, I already have NFL Sunday Ticket. Let's say I get a deal on an HD package and get it. When does the NFL Superfan package go on special down from $99? I've noticed that DirecTV drops the price on most sports packages as the seasons progress but I have never noticed when.

Thanks for all the info guys. :)

Best thing to do is just call and see what they offer. Ask for the best deal that they can offer you and then when they come back with the offer ask "is there anything else you can do to help offset the costs." You may get some credits for free HD for a few months, or something similiar. I don't think you have anything to lose, if you don't like the deal you can always call back later and if your serious try the cacel service threat...but I wouldn't play that card too strongly unless you mean it.

As far as you term of service it could affect the deal, I'm not sure about that. But you do have NFL Sunday ticket which could help.
