Hi everyone, I am hoping someone here has a suggestion to fix my HR20-700.

For about a month I have had problems where the HDMI stops working on my HR20. I get no video or audio and the only solution is an RBR or pulling the plug. After it reboots the HDMI is working again for both audio and video. While troubleshooting I have found that the component out is working however the optical audio does not seem to be working. The HR20 continues recording as normal even when the HDMI is not working. Any suggestions on how to fix or should I start looking at options for replacement.

Thanks, BP

ETA: To clarify the HDMI works most of the time but about once every few days stops working randomly and starts working again after a reboot. The optical audio doesn't ever seem to work, however that may be user error with my A/V receiver.

You're probably right: the audio and video are two different problems. As for the video, it sounds like it could be an issue with the HDMI handshake between the DirecTV receiver and the TV. Why don't you use component video. Many professional A/V installers routinely use component video cables for exactly this reason. The PQ is generally the same, some people even prefer component video, depending on the TV, and there's never any HDMI interoperability problems.

bigpuma,

What make/model/year TV do you have?

And if you can find it, which version of firmware does it have?

Have you tried a new cable? (happens sometimes.)

As for the optical, what AV receiver are you using?

Cheers,
Tom

Vizio P50HDTV10A purchased at the end of 2006. Same time as I got the HR20 and it has been working fine until recently.

If you mean the software version I downloaded the CE last night in hopes that it would fix the problem. ox25b so far so good but this problem happens every few days so I will see.

Not yet but I will if this keeps happening and I find one.

Yamaha TX-SR674 currently I have the HDMI running to the receiver then HDMI from the receiver to the TV. I really need to play around more with the receiver in case I am doing something wrong and try a different optical cable.

I will update this thread if the problem continues. Thanks for any suggestions in case it does.

I would definitely do this if I could get the optical audio working. I will try to get it working later if the problem persists.

Next time the HDMI video stops, try turning off both the TV and HR2x. Unplug the HDMI cable for a minute, then reconnect it and try again. I’ve had a similar issue with my HR20-700 and Panasonic plasma that’s been working for about 6 months. What I’ve found is that if the HR20 is on for a while and the TV is not, the HDMI handshaking seems to time-out and it takes something to wake it up.

Was curious if you knew the version of the software in the Vizio. We might also want to check if there is a firmware upgrade for the Yamaha.

Once I have that info, I'll try to ask around a bit...
