HDMI "handshake" delays?

1343 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  rudeney
I recently replaced my component cables with HDMI from both my HR20-100's.

Currently both HR's go to separate inputs on my Marantz SR7001 receiver, with a single HDMI output to my LG 50pc5d.

Sometimes, when selecting one of the two HRs, the screen alternates between snow and black, with no audio. The other box never does this. I have shut off NATIVE b/c the switching was taking way to long.

Thoughts?

Have you tried swapping the HDMI cables to see if it's a bad cable/port?
Personally, I believe HDMI is “not yet ready for prime-time”. MyHR20-700 connected via HDMI directly to my Panasonic TH50PZ77U has been working flawlessly for months, but has suddenly decided not to “handshake” about once a week. This seems to be after the 0x235 update, but my guess is the problem is likely rooted more in HDCP/DRM than D*’s firmware. Maybe someday when HDTV and all these DRM issues affect the “Joe Sixpacks” ability to view NASCAR and Jery Springer, we’ll have enough class-action lawsuits to put it to rest. :)

I have had the same thing happen 3 times going from a HR20-100 via HDMI directly to my Sony SXRD. Native is off. I have audio, but I am going optical to my a/v receiver for sound. I can only get picture back with a reset so I just switch to componet until its convenient to do so. This started happening 2 NR updates ago.
UPDATE: Cycling output power (i.e., by pressing the power button - not overall power) to the affected HR20 fixed the problem. I tried it again this morning and the (output) power-cycling last night may have prevented the problem.

I believe the Marantz rcvr ONLY passes HDMI to HDCP compliant displays (based on a comment in the Marantz manual). Therefore, I believe the Marantz rcvr handshakes HDCP directly with the TV and also directly w/ the HR20, and avoids the need to act as a go-between for the handshake between the TV and the HR20. However, because I do not get audio during the handshaking, the issue might be between the Marantz and the HR20, and not include the TV.
I have always had intermittent HDMI issues with Native On... I've learned to live with them.

My problems are with native off - I have mine set to output only 1080i. I know some people say their TV does a better job of scaling than the HR2x, but I'm not going for perfect quality here; I just don't like the delays and flashing when changing between different resolutions on different channels.
