HDTivo Replacement Program

So, I get a pre-recorded call the other night at home telling me to call D* and they will replace my equipment at no charge with the newer better D* stuff.

I currently have TIVO units with 2 SD and 1 HD. I call and they tell me they will only replace the HD unit, not the others. No problem, though I tell him what has kept me from switching up to this point is no confirmation that the new unit will be able to get OTA and no DLB. His response - no problem, I will make a note, you will get both of those! I don't believe him. I am not sure why, but I just don't.

He went on to say that D* is currently finalizing negotiations with TIVO to provide all the TIVO functionality in the D* units. I think my call was transferred to a CSR in Fantasyland...

Oh well, I will at least get the new box on the 18th and can keep my old one to replace a TIVO unit that has one broken tuner.

Yeah, I want what he has been smoking.

You will not get DLB. You might or mght not get a box with OTA. If you do not, you can then call back and should be able to get the add-on OTA solution.
DLB and OTA? Are you sure it wasn't a Dish CSR you were talking to??
I think you were talking to a CSR that gets a cash bonus for each new receiver leased!

Yeah... Someone is smoking something. As for the guarantee of the OTA reception, if you get an HR21 (and most likely you will), just call back up to DirecTV and request the AM21 add-on OTA tuner. If you tell them that you had gotten your OTA via your receiver in the past, they might just send out the AM21 to you free of cost, but be prepared to pay for it or shipping.

As for the TIVO functionality statement, I'm sure something like that would have made it to DBSTalk already if it was truely going to happen.

My parents got a call this evening regarding the upgrade. Mom told her they would have to speak to me and got a number. So tomorrow I will go to their house and call.

My requirements are simple:

AM21 unless they get an HR20 as they watch a lot of OTA HD and we don't have locals yet
SWM8 or the installer can FISH an OTA line

Its that simple.
Well my install went as scheduled, on time, very knowledgeable installer and quick. Installed the new dish - so much for the days of the unobtrusive 18" dishes, a new multi-switch and the HR-21.

Much to my surprise - not - it doesn't have DLB or OTA - now the call for an AM21. But quite frankly I may just call and have them take back the HR-21 - DLB is a must have and it has been apparent this week watching the Olympics. With football season just around the corner, I don't think the HR-21 will cut it. I tend to watch one primary game and then switch back to a 2nd or 3rd game depending whether or not I am at live TV. Can' t do that anymore and I don't like it.

Coincidentally, my neighbor had DISH installed the same day and lo and behold the lowly dish has DLB, go figure.
Yeah, DLB is a huge loss. I use the workaround sometimes, but it doesn't work as well. :(
Yes, there is no DLB .. As for HD, it will not be long before you will no longer be able to get HD via the Sat on the HR10-250. OTA or SD via Sat will continue to be an option on the HR10-250.
