Hello everyone...and yet another cable to DISH question.

Hello everyone -

I have finally had it with Charter cable and have decided to move to DISH Network, mostly because of the number of HD channels it offers (Charter only has 7 or 8). I just bought my house a year ago and the introductory cable package (12 month) has finished and now I am being charged an outrageous amount for not that great a service.

I have the install scheduled this weekend for DISH, and hopefully if all goes well, I will be enjoying the Pats game in HD by Sunday afternoon.

Anyhow...

The previous owner had cable run to 5 rooms in the house, and actually had lcd tvs hung in the corner of each of these rooms (a little overboard). The cable line comes into the house where it goes into a power amp that boosts the signal and then goes to a splitter that goes off into the 5 different locations.

I have read some posts that suggest that the DISH technician should be able to connect to the existing cable lines instead of having to run new wire everywhere. Would he definitely be able to do this? All of the wiring looks to be Cat 5 R-6. Also, would I be able to utilize this power amp to boost the signal in the line??? I was getting great PQ with the cable feed, mostly due to this power amp apparently (this is what the cable techs told me...they were blown away at how much signal I was getting).

Yet another question - I am going to retain the cable internet from Charter, as out here in western MA they have a stranglehold on anything other than dial-up. I have read some conflicting posts where some people say you can have Sat and Cable Internet run on the same lines, and some say that you can't. Is there anyway to have both? Would it be as easy as determing which line from the splitter goes to the room with the cable modem and connecting that line directly to the cable feed?

I am getting a Vip622 and it looks like also a DVR 625 (I have 3 tvs --> 1 HD and 2 SD). One potential problem I see is that all three tvs are on seperate floors. The HD on the first floor will get the Vip622 no problem. Then I think the DVR 625 will go to the tv on the top floor...I can worry about connecting the tv on the second floor to this box later so that the tech doesnt have to do any fishing.

Anyhow...if any of you guys could give me some ideas about what to do with the wiring and cable internet I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Chris

Satelite needs direct feeds to every location. From what you say theres a location where 5 Coax cables jump off a splitter to the 5 locations in the house. It sounds like this location is 'inside' your house. Your getting 2 receivers. I'm going to assume that you only have ONE coax to each location so the installer will run into 1 issue, which I'll get to later. He'll need to install a DPP LNB/dish w/ a DPP44 switch and bring 2 feeds into your house to the area where your splitter currently resides, where he will connect directly to the cable that feeds the 1st floor and 3rd floor locations. I think the vip is a dual tuner, but I could be wrong, the 625 defitntly is, the installer can use a seperator to feed ports 1 and 2 at the receiver. The only issue is how to get the '2nd room' output from the 3rd floor receiver to the 2nd floor TV. But you said you'd worry about that later. As far as internet, no they cannot share the same feed but as I said the installer is gonna need to bring in at least another feed for Satv so you'll need 3 total Coax's going into your house, 1 for internet, 2 for satv. You say you have Cat5 in your house, if its not allready being used for phone, you could use it for internet if it all feeds to 1 central location......place your cable modem there and distribute it to the whole house w/ a hub.

A couple of corrections for 'Shadough', with just two dual tuner rcvrs, you'll only need a DishPro Plus LNB with 2 lines from the two ports out to where your five existing cables are (cable junction). One line from a DP Dual LNB from a 2nd Dish(HD) (61.5) to the in port of the DishPro Plus LNB. No DPP44 switches needed. At your cable junction, one line from the dish will go to the 622 rcvr and be separated out with a separator to the two tuner inputs. The second line from the dish will go into the 'sat' port of a 'diplexer' (combines satellite/antenna signals) at the cable junction and the cable leading to the 625 rcvr location will go into the 'in/out' port of the diplexer. A jumper cable from the wall plate will go into the 'in/out' port of a second diplexer, and a second small jumper from the 'sat' port into the separator leading to the tuner inputs of the 625 rcvr. The TV2 signal from the 625 for your 3rd room can be sent back up the same cable to your cable junction by connecting a jumper from the TV2 output on the rcvr to the 'TV/Ant' input on the diplexer. At the cable junction, whatever cable leading to your 3rd room can be connected to the 'TV/Ant' port on the diplexer. Usually the installers carry the diplexers. :eek2:

going to the 625 rcvr will go into a 'diplexer' first. At the rcvr, a second diplexer
