I live in the New Orleans area, and my dish was "rearranged"' after Gustav. I think I have the AT-9 with the side car [5 lnb]

Anyhow, my brother and I re-installed it back to the original position [or so we thought]

When we went inside to re-install the satellite on my HR20 DVR, [of course nothing is aligned right], I picked the dish type as "04: Slimline-5". This seemed to be the only one that kind of matched what I have. As I went through the signal strength of each satellite, the only readings were for 101, 110, 119, & 103c. I have HD locals, and I know they are on 103s, but that one does not show up. Also, what really bothers me, is that 99c & 99s do not show up?

So my question is, did something get damaged on the dish that I do not have a signal from 103s, 99c & 99s? Is the HR20 smart enough to recognize this?

Everything was working before we left. Now I have nothing.

I called out a tech to come re-align, but I think I have more problems.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,
John

I posted this in another thread, but I think it might have been in the wrong sub-forum.

I also need help after Gustav. I live close to Baton Rouge. I only have a weak signal on 119 and 0's everywhere else. No channels are coming in. I suspect that Gustav realigned my dish with the 80 plus MPH winds we were getting. I've gone to dishpointer.com to get data for re-alignment. How easy is it to re-align? I've never been up there before: Are there any indicators on the dish itself to help with the process or do you need to have special tools? Our local tech company isn't even open yet due to their power still being out, so a tech assisted realignment may be weeks away. Our power just came back yesterday. Thanks for any help.

Edit: Nevermind, searched through a few threads and found the answer to my questions. Looks like it will be trial and error without a meter.

It could just be the alignment if the 103 signal you do have is already pretty low.

I would not worry too much until the realignment is done, it could just be a bit of tweaking is needed.
Thanks for the answer, but why doesn't the 99 sat show up at all?

Thanks,
John

The 99 and 103 satellites are ridiculously finicky when it comes to aiming the dish.

One thing you may want to do is go to www.dishpointer.com to get the settings for your dish. Make sure you click on "Multi-LNB Setups"

For me, it's been a while since I worked with mine, so does anyone know a good link with instructions for dithering the dish and retuning the 99 and 103?

As Draconis said, they are very picky.

I can drastically effect my 99/103 signals just by pushing a bit on one side of the dish.

99 and 103 use a different technology (Ka) vs. the others (Ku) and it requires much more precise alignment.

Hope you guys get all the support we had down here after Wilma. There were D* trucks all over the place putting dishes back up and doing realignments. They were not even charging customers for this, they did impress me with their efforts. Glad to hear you are getting things back in order. We are keeping our eyes on Ike.

There are going to be tons of techs there next week, they are sending 2 guys from our shop out there on Monday! And we have a fairly small shop. They asked me to go but unfortunately it is just not the right time for me.

Another thing to add,

Examine the mast bolts........see if the wind forced the mast to move. You will see slide marks from the original position. Sometimes just putting the mast back to the original position makes everything work.

Hope you get lucky,

It is easier to tune the 101.......the slimline is centered on that sat. Then tune the 103.....it is a little west (to the right when standing behind the dish) Verify the mast is plumb, the tilt and elevation are set to the spec for your zip and just move the dish a degree at a time until 103 comes up.

I have done many with this technique and then verified it with a Birdog...no adjustment needed. The dither thing seems unnecessary.
