HELP! External DVD Recording ??

1480 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Rob Glasser
I'm a new ViP622 owner and I have been recording like crazy on this unit. But now that I have so much....how do I save my favorite recordings to another DVD recorder? It looks like I can record while the program is live....but how do I save a recording that is already saved on the 622? Any help would be greatly appreciated or a point in the right direction if this is the wrong place to ask about this. Thanks in advance!

There is some DVDR releated links on the Tips page.

In general, a DVDR would act like a VCR and you would have to playback the recording you want to save and then use the DVDR to record it off the svideo, composite or component outputs
Thanks Ron....so it is possible then. Thats good news! Anyone else doing this? Any recommendations for recorders?
Are there any plans to add USB HD support? I'm only interested in HD recording and archiving.
Yes, external USB drives have been talked about and DISH has even demonstrated this feature at a couple of trade shows. Hopefully it will come about soon. I know there are lots of people that are interested in this feature.

There are plans for external USB storage, but it will not be "exportable". Once you enter the realm of HD, you lose the ability to copy files around on almost all DVR platforms. To wit:

  • Dish Network does not support "downloading" of HD content
  • TiVo S3 does not support TiVo2Go (not even SD)
  • DirecTV's HR20 uses eSATA (as do some cable DVRs) and doesn't allow the internal drive to be active while an external drive is attached (although you can record directly to the external drive).

I understand the file system and/or copy protection will be proprietary and could only be used with your receiver. I just want to expand the amount of recording (file saving) time.

Then you will likely be happy with the system that E* is working on ... external archiving.
If it's SD then Pocket Dish does a good job of offloading some.
It transfers 1 hour of SD in 5 min.

Any idea on what time frame we are looking at? Also will it just increase the recording time or will it be for archiving purposes only?
What I'm hearing is archiving. Of course, if you free up space on your DVR drive you will have more recording time there, so in effect by moving programs elsewhere you are increasing recording time.

Time frames are hard to guess. I believe E* wanted this by the end of the year, but there are a lot of things that take longer than E* wants and I'm not going to be the one who makes a promise E* doesn't keep. :)
Or just feed TV1 via S-Video and audio cables into a DVD recorder. This will record in SD even if the source is HD. Or feed TV2 via Coax into a DVD recorder same SD only recording.

Stay at 2 hours oer DVD and it will look pretty good if you use a decent brand and not a $89 cheappy.
Does anyone know if we will have to obtain the external drive from E*, or would we be able to use an outboard USB drive that we already have? Maybe the 622 will be able to format my drive in the propriatary format??? If not, will the drive be a purchase, lease, etc?

Thanks

Since this feature has not been released yet it's hard to say what Dish is going to do. I'm sure there are lots of assumptions and/or rumors out there to what they are going to, but the reality is, no one, except maybe some Dish employees, know for sure.
