I narrowly escaped being sent an R15 receiver from D* but figured out it wasn't a TIVO unit and was able to cancel the order. I thought I'd be smart and order a receiver off of ebay, and I did win the auction but the guy wants to charge me $70 shipping to get it from Georgia to Houston by Thursday (10/20). Does anyone on here have an old R10 to sell? I won the online auction for $75, so I'd be willing to pay that plus (reasonable) shipping to get it here by Thursday. The only thing I care about is that it's a working box in good condition and a legitimate box - no unpaid charges, non-release by old owner, etc. I have two boxes, one of which I'm not planning on using anymore and D* told me that I could reuse my access card. Okay - thanks for considering!

You placed a bid on eBay with out knowing the shipping costs first? Shame on you.

Shame on the seller for being a con man and a cheat, too, of course.

No, his shipping said it was $20 for standard ground and I, being a newbie to ebay, figured it would be like $20 more for 2nd day. I mean, I know they have a markup on shipping, I just didn't realize it would be so exorbinate. Also, I've emailed him three times asking if the price ($70) was indeed for 2nd day, because his invoice didn't specify that it was, and he has not replied to me. It's been 24 hours so I'm getting a little nervous. I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger on another plan, because I want to give the guy a chance to NOT be a shiester (sp?), but I'm not holding out any hope and I really want an R10, you know?

Georgia to Houston shoundn't be but a 3 day trip by ground. I'd pay the $20 and it should be there by Thursday IF he ships it Monday.
Or try USPS Priority 2-3 day. either way a jump from $20 to $70 is a big jump for him to take.

Rates really do shoot up for guaranteed services like 2nd day. $70 might be a little high but not by much accordign to my quick estimates. (20lbs from atlanta to houston would be over $46 by 2nd air, and I always expect to pay a bit extra for the guys's packing materials and time to get the box ready and shipped to you.)
I agree you should go with a standard service, preferaby the postal service rather that UPS, and you likely have it almost as quick.

Unfortunately the guy doesn't offer anything but UPS. AND, he finally emailed me and acted like he had never sent me an invoice for $70 shipping. I'm giving him one more chance to give me a good quote and then I'm going to try something else. Thanks for your suggestions!

The ebay guy has come through - apparently there was some sort of mistake made on the invoice and he has revised to a MUCH more reasonable rate. I appreciate everyone's suggestions!

I was pretty much set on picking up a new-in-box SD-DVR40 for $19.99 on clearance from the local Compusa in my area. But now the HR10-250 has gone clearance for $199! So I'm torn with what to do.

The SD-DVR40 is a whole lot less money and I don't have HDTV service through DirecTV currently. I do have a Panasonic HDTV LCD micro though at home. But I really don't want to pay the extra for HDTV through DirecTV at this point; maybe in the future.

What to do. Please advise with what you would do ASAP as I don't want to lose the opportunity to get either one before they sell.

Thanks

Ok. I did. I decided to purchase both the DVR40 and the HR10-250. Now I have to decide which one to keep.

It seems silly to use the HR10-250 since I'm not subscribed to D* HDTV service. Which one is better hacked?
