HMC34, RVU, and Samsung

Read some of the other threads and apologize for being such a noob, but I still don't understand the RVU technology. I just ordered the HMC34 and the CSR was new but tried to explain RVU and because I have a Samsung 8000 model, it wasn't compatible so I had to go with whole home setup with the 34 plus two additional receivers for the other rooms. I also have the CCK coming but read that I may not need that because I can just link my 34 to a wireless router. I knew this but do I need the CCK because of the additional receivers? I'll settle for help as to whether I need the the kit first and deal with RVU later. The tech is coming out on friday. I would appreciate any help and I'll have to make myself a regular here so I won't have to ask a lot of questions in the future. Man, when did things get so complicated?

Forget about RVU for least a year.

Yes, you should have a CCK.
According to this press release by Samsung last month (Link)...

This year, Samsung will embed the RVU protocol in its entire line of Smart TVs and underscores the company's ongoing commitment to deliver to consumers high-quality, visually enhanced and connected entertainment experiences in their home. Based on industry standards such as DLNA and UPnP, RVU allows a set-top box server to provide a complete, multi-room viewing experience that includes DVR services across all the connected TVs in the home through a single set-top box.

I don't have a clue if that means only new TVs or whether or not it will include a firmware upgrade to existing sets...or if it will happen at all.

A CCK is not needed if your HR34 is within reach of your router (or a network switch) and you can run an ethernet line from your router or switch directly to the HR34 ethernet port. You will have internet connectivity to ALL your SWiM connected receivers. However don't argue with them because their scripts say it is required. Just let them install it Worse case after they leave if you no longer want it just sell it. It really doesn't matter either way.
All this technology being applied to the simple act of watching TV is rapidly frying my brain. As BoJatey stated, "Man, when did things get so complicated"? RVU enabled gear,DECA,clients, servers,SWM and on,and on. Pretty soon, the homes of those who want/need all this technology will turn into a NASA control room. I have 5 HD tvs/HDDVR receivers and I get a spectacular picture on all of them. And I don't have the need to record 5 programs at once.
Here's what the tech is bringing tomorrow:

1 DIRECTV® HMC HD DVR
1 DIRECTV® HD Receiver
1 DIRECTV Plus® DVR
1 WholeHome Upgrd & CCK
1 DIRECTV® Slimline Dish

I keep reading that I may not need cck because I am getting WHDVR and my HMC34 has an ethernet port, but this is only if I run a cable directly, is this correct? Also, I thought that the cck would take the place of a wireless router but do I still need one even if I use cck and if I do, is there no wireless hookup as an alternative to using the cck? Also, any good recommendations or are they basically the same? I know some of you have already replied and I do appreciate your feedback. I just need a little more detail and clarification before this guy shows up tomorrow. One last thing if you will indulge me. I 'm also reading about DECA's and SwiM as possible ways to hookup. Could someone please explain these to me. In advance, I thank you for sharing your knowledge and it's coming slowly to me but it is coming. Thank you.

Drucifer, unless you have a crystal ball, I'm not sure how you can back that up. I agree that RVU isn't "there yet" but even I don't know how quickly it will improve.

The CCK will not take the place of a wireless router. It just connects your receivers to your existing router.

I am a total noob with directv installations but I recently had my whole system upgraded and did a lot of research before and after.

I guess the most important question here is: Will you be able to run a ethernet cable directly to your HM34? If yes then you dont really need cck. If they want to install it thats fine you can take it out later. If you can't run the ethernet cable to the HM34 then you will need the CCK (I believe there are wireless and broadband versions, i got broadband so not sure about wireless).

Your Directv Plus DVR (non hi def) is going to need a filter. This receiver wont be able to access the recordings from the HM34. You may have been better off getting another HD receiver because even without a DVR built in it would still have access to the recordings of the HM34.

Depending on what model of HD receiver they give you, you may need a DECA (a box that splits the coaxial and ethernet) or not. Just make sure you can access a test recording from the HR34 in the HD receiver or try to download a free Video on Demand.

Good luck and enjoy your new system.

They gave me that standard receiver because I told them I don't have an HD TV yet in my bedroom. Got the 3rd because price was same as 2. but that's probably going back and I'll keep the HD. Just bought a router and can't even get that to work. Feel like a loser. Man, 20 years ago I was building computers when all you needed was a case, motherboard, a couple of drives, some memory, and a video card. Today, I know nothing. Knew I needed an adapter to setup my computer wirelessly, but the guy at Best Buy said I didn't need one if I had the 802.11 card. I knew it and walked out anyway. Still setup with a cable but can't get a connection. Of course, tear it apart and connection is good again. Go figure. I'll try again later and if no go, I'll leave it for the tech tomorrow. He'll be here a good 3 hours, enough time to pick his brain. By the time he's done, he'll be glad to get rid of me but he'll get free pizza out of it and I should be downloading On Demand.
All my HD receivers (H23 and H25) have composite out (red, white and yellow). So even though they are High definition boxes they should be able to connect to a standard definition set. If you get the HD receiver now, you won't have to call directv later on to switch receivers when you replace your TV. Of course if you only have two tv's you dont want to pay 6 dollars a month for an additional box you wont be using,
Raimar - Just to clarify - If you can connect the HR34 to ethernet you do not need the CCK? I have ethernet where the HR34 is located from a prior TiVo. The installer didn't use it because he setup the CCK into the switch located near the DirecTV switch. Is there any advantage to one over the other?

This question has been "clarified" multiple times including in this thread just a few messages back. Anyway, there is no advantage of either method (except the "direct connect" will temporarily lose your internet connection on your HR network if the HR34 is rebooted). However if you setup an HR34 install with DirecTV they will "require" the CCK. If you wish to remove it (nd sell it) after they leave you can.
