The All Star home run contest must be the most over-hyped and biggest waste of air time in history, even with the 20-plus HRs. The real HR kings of baseball (A-Rod, Manny, Junior, etc.) aren't included, so a bunch of no-names (I didn't know that babe from Wisteria Lane also played baseball, I thought basketball was her sport) are brought out. And the constant meaningless babble from the crew led by Boomer (Joe Morgan on Sunday night baseball is bad enough, but on All-Star Monday too?) . Please...!!! And did I mention the probing questions by the on-field reporter, old what's her household name? At least when Suzie (?) interviewed Joe Namath a few years ago he was drunk and had an excuse for a lousy interview, (okay, not so lousy) but these ex-MLB stars....real in-depth stuff that MLB can be proud of. And it went on until 11:30 or some ridiculous hour. ESPN should have cut away for something more important, like the quarter finals of a poker tournament........... The event could be fun, but badly needs fixing (didn't I hear that last year also?) Please ESPN, rise to the challenge!

I guess that's why there are remotes. Feel free to change the channel anytime. I admit, it's not the greatest thing going, and I don't blame any player for not participating. However!, A-Rod should have been in it, being in NY. But again, he is a Yankee, what do you expect! And I think Madonna had a PPV on at 9pm!

It's better than nothing, but why in the he** they have the game decide who has home field. Typical Bud Selig. He's gotta go before something else gets screwed up!

Yeah, I think a lot of people who were voting for a Longoria in the All-Star Game were doing so because of Eva, not Evan.

MLB would have done a much better job with people like A-Rod, Manny, Giambi, etc. participating in the HR Derby. I think Josh Hamilton did a heck of a job in the 1st round, though.

Can't someone just kill Berman already? I tired of him and his stupid catchphrases sometime around 1989 I think. And ESPN absolutely sucks!!!

I'm only a casual fan, but I knew everybody in the contest. I agree there were bigger names available, but you can't make them compete. Heck, even my wife who watches 2 or 3 baseball games per year knew who half the guys were.

I do, however, agree that Berman is brutal (I think I've *****ed about him before here) and almost wants to make me not watch, but I'm glad I did.

Most of it was a bit dull, but thanks to Josh Hamilton, that was the best Home Run Derby I've seen in a long, long time.

Best ratings in about 10 years too.

I read that the powers that be literally begged A-Rod to participate. He refused. Maybe he figured he might not win and then the fans would bring up Madonna?

Don't know about Manny and Junior.

I agree with Spartan. I was flipping through channels when it game on, and when I saw the show Hamilton was putting on, I set down the remote and finished out the competition!

I agree it would have been great to have some of the "big names" out there doing what they do best... but unfortunately, the "big names" in the game right now aren't really interested in anything but their own paycheck (well, OK, I guess A-Rod cares about Madonna and his paycheck)

You can't make those guys compete, and even if you could, how good a show is it going to be if they don't really want to be there.

At least the guys in the show wanted to be there and were excited about the opportunity.

And what about Hamilton's BP pitcher. He's been to Yankee stadium twice. First to see Don Larsen's perfect game, and then to 'pitch a gem' for Hamilton's record setting display!

I enjoyed it emmensely! Hamilton rocketed the ball, nearly as good as Mark McGuire had in the past. I was disapointed he lost though, since he and the picther made one heck of a story.

Morneau is a good kid, with a really pretty swing. I wasn't disappointed to see him win, but Josh Hamilton really was the feel good story of the all star game and it would have made for an even better story if he'd have pulled it off.
