Houston, we have a problem! - LOCAL ABC & FOX

1587 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Cap'n Preshoot
Gents, a newbie here, had the HR20 since Nov 18... wonding if others in Houston are experiencing problems with HD local feeds, specifically ABC and FOX. I have read other's reviews of the FOX issues, but have not seen any issues with ABC.

My Fox issue include the blue ghosting images. The ABC issues are "static" on periphery of screen. Tech visit today illustrated strong signal strength... tech even went on to state that his OTA experiences similar problems. I'm calling BS.

Are others experiencing problems with KTRK (ABC) and KRIV (Fox), and what can we do as a work around? What is best OTA antenna for the money? What are the issues with OTA antenna and the HR20 (assume I can connect directly to TV).

Thanks for the help.

Even though in the title it states OTA... they do discuss the quality, and issues with the DTV feeds

I saw the same blue ghosting on recorded Fox 26 (House) with audio dropouts and blue screens. Flipped to OTA and didn't see the problem. Fox has usually had excellent PQ so maybe a fluke. I've had consistent PQ (minor pixellation) issues with ABC 13 mpeg4 HD (eg. Desparate Housewives). Even SD programs have digital dropouts. If I know the program is not HD, I will record off of HN13. Not as crisp, but stable. Antenna: I have a DB2 UHF in my attic, with rabbit ears for VHF ch.8 KUHF. Plenty of good discussion in the forum for antennas.

This past week's SF-SEA game was unwatchable on my HR20 due to the color ghosting (mostly reds). I had to watch it on my DTivo (where the problem did not show up). The same thing happened during at least one game of the World Series. I guess we will have to wait for OTA as a workaround.
At least y'all have the HD MPEG4's coming in. I'm just a hair outside the Houston DMA and we don't have any.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one. I sent D* an e-mail about this. Someone called and talked to my wife but they were not very helpful. The person claimed that the latest update should take care of it. After that I decided to e-mail KRIV here in Houston and let them know. I have not checked it today (Family is watching stuff) but I will later. Yesterday though the color problem was still there. I read 1 post over at AVS forums that said that they were having problems with KRIV and KCHW with OTA antennas. So there could be the possibility that KRIV is having a problem. However I was at a friends house last night and they have Cable and the KRIV HD feed :nono2: was perfect. So I came home and checked again and I still had color issues. If KRIV is having a problem then something on the D* is making it worse.

I also see problems with KTRK and the pixelation problems. Again the cable HD works great. I have audio drop outs on all of my Mpeg4 channels. Fox, Abc, Cbs, Nbc. I have had this since my first box. I am now on box number 2. None of the updates to this date have solved that problem. KTRK has had pixel issues for going on a month and a half for me.

I just sent another email to DTV since it is happening again today during the Dallas-Bucs game.
All, I'm still experiencing the same ghosting problems on KRIV (FOX) (no change for the last week). KTRK (ABC) was not, nor has not, had ghosting, experiencing light "static" in top and side portions of HD programming (OHIO ST v Michigan last week).

I purchased a Channel Master antenna last night (as I have a HD Tuner built in to my TV). I live NW, (290 & the Belt) and the antenna works great. The ABC issue is not present, and it also corrected the picture on FOX, BUT the audio on FOX is garbled. I'm going to write KRIV tonight, as well as DirecTV.

How can we spend all this $$$ and have to put up with this product!

Hope to hear from others... (misery loves company)

I wouldn't be overly anxious to get them if I were you. I have them and the PQ is uniformly bad on all of them. Lots and lots of compression artifacting. Certainly not what I bought an HDTV for......and yes, presently there is a huge problem on KRIV. Only affecting the D* feed tho. KRIV (26-1) OTA is flawless.

I turned on KRIV-HD this morning and it appears that the color has return to normal.:D I still have some pixelation issues with KTRK though.

This thread that Earl Bonavich recommended at the beginning of this discussion,

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=452612

I also highly recommend. There is some presence in that forum by some of the station engineers, who will occasionally answer questions. Merely post intelligently, control the desire to rant and you may get more info than you've been finding here.

As Earl mentioned, that particular thread is for Houston OTA issues but there has been some limited discussion of both cable and satellite issues for Houston folks as well.
