Just moved into an apartment with a south facing view that has a bit of obstruction to the south-east direction and has a balcony above me and a wall to the east side.

Kinda hard to explain, maybe I'll post up pics later but is there a way I can test and make sure I am able to receive D* signal other than getting a physical dish and testing it out manually?

you can go to http://www.dishpointer.com and locate your building and the dish type you will setup and you can see the LOS from there. they also have an app you can buy if you have a smartphone.

Oh !! The usefull things you can find on the internet !!! I lloked up my address for grins and giggles it showed my house and with a little playing around I found out my line of site..

Satellite AR is free and works fine on my android smartphone. Don't know if there is an iPhone version.
