Hey all,

I apparently have a bad BBC. I've swapped the BBC's from one tuner to the other as well as swapping the input cables and it appears I have a bad BBC. My question is How do I change tuners when my HR20 is on the tuner with the bad BBC? I am not recording anything so I cannot go to the "LIST" to see what my other channel is. I used to be able to hit the "LIVE TV" button on the Tivo, but alas, no easy button like that. Changing the channel does not solve this problem, or so I think from my limited attempts to try and solve this problem by changing the channel.

I have new BBC's on order, but they said 3-5 days. My girlfriend can't last that long with a 771 message on the screen.

Also, why or how would i get 0% on only one of my off air tuners? I ran the Info/Ant Test and get 0%

Sorry if this is a repeat question, I couldn't find anything with the search function

My suggestion is to remove one cable, attach the good BBC to the other cable (and attach that to SAT1 in), and reboot. Your DVR should sense only one cable is connected and you should have no more 771s.

If the tuner tests say OK, 0%, that means the tuner hasn't been used since the DVR was rebooted (or came out of standby, or two sat tuners were used). Just focus on the "OK" part and you'll be ok. If you go into antenna setup, or tune two OTA channels consecutively, it should test out more to your expectation.

If you reboot the receiver with only the good cable & bbc connected to tuner 1, the HR2x will ignore tuner 2.

Or you can just connect to tuner 2 without the bad bbc - you won't get any of the new HD stuff, but you won't get the 771 error

Hey guys thanks for all the help..

I had already rebooted with the one bad BBC right before I went to work and it was hung up on "acquiring guide data" Looks like i'll have to reboot with the good BBC hooked up only when I get home.

Guy on the learning curve here...

So the BBCs are the filters attached to the back?

And, should one fail, you can remove it, the only consequence being you won't get some ("new HD stuff") channels?

Good stuff to know and just want to squirrel away that info.

Thanks

wojo27, are you saying you have two bad BBCs, or only one? Your first post led me to believe it was only one. If you think both are bad, I would search elsewhere down the line, like a multiswitch for example.

Eric, yes the B-Band Converters (BBCs) are the little square pigtail things between the satellite lines and DVR. If you take them out, you won't get any of the HD channels except possibly your locals and a few older ones, and you may get on-screen errors like our original poster is getting.

Sorry Stuart, I have only one bad BBC.(edited above) I think i had the good BBC hooked up to tuner 2 and the bad one to Tuner 1 and thats what caused the hang up with the guide data.

So that prompts another question.

If these BBC's are so fragile, are they much more robust (sturdy) when they get built into the H23? and any future recievers?

And finally - does anyone have an idea (guess, wild guess) about how the future BSS system will be integrated? will we have a super BBC that helps convert the signal? or can our reciever/dish get everything we need as is? or will we need new receivers? (i'm reposting this question on the D11 Sat: Post Seperation and BSS threads)

As far as the robustness of external BBCs vs. the internal ones in H23, the difference is in the strain on the cable and the banging around they might get from users pushing their receivers back into their entertainment centers. Internal items don't have these problems.

When they were first shipped, BBCs were packed in a box where the cable had to make a 90° bend to fit in the box, which far exceeded the recommended bend for RG6 cable. Newer ones are packaged properly, but can still bang around in shipping.

Sort of... but they aren't filters. They are active components that translate a certain frequency range of the signal at the input side of the BBC to a different frequency range on the output side.

Thank you for that clarification! :)
