Hi all-

About three months ago I got a new HD DVR (722) and an SD DVR (522). When I bought my first HDTV. Now I'm thinking about buying a second HDTV and wanted to upgrade the SD DVR to an HD.

I called dish and was told that I can only upgrade every twelve months, so I can not upgrade again for another nine months. They suggested I contact a retailer to buy a unit.

My question is...is there really no way to upgrade again? I'm willing to pay more for the new unit but they don't seem to have that as an option. I was really confused because I would think there's lots of upgrading going on now to HD and also to DVRs.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Sorry to butt in, but I have a similar question. I have 2 ViP - 222's, if I "buy" an additional Vip 211 -- what addtional fees and what do I need to do for installing it to run a 3rd HD TV? thanks!

I understand their rules but you would think that you could pay an additional fee to cover their cost of an upgrade before the year is up. I also noticed that I can't spell "second". Sorry.

I've been struggling with this problem. I can't add a second 722 or 612 to replace my old 508's and get a deal until September 15. I want to make certain I have the ability to record more than two HD shows (off the satellites, I can't get OTA) by September 22 when the networks have scheduled Sarah Conner, Heroes, Dancing with the Stars and The Big Bang Theory all at the same time. This is a serious problem in our household.

Edit: I season shift to have something to watch in the network repeat periods, the Summer, and during strikes.

Their rules are in place because they give you a deep discount on leased receivers AND include installation (including any dish/LNB/switch upgrades needed). They can't afford to give you several hundred dollars worth of equipment and service all the time, so they limit you to once a year. This is to keep people from changing their mind all the time and running up big costs.

You are free to upgrade anytime you want to, but not via lease; instead, you have to buy the receiver from a retailer (at full price; but you own it), plus pay for installation (or do it yourself, or hire out yourself), plus pay for any dish/LNB/switch upgrades you might need to get that receiver running. In other words, you ARE "pay[ing] an additional fee to cover their cost of an upgrade", because now you have to pay all of the costs that Dish has to absorb whenever they upgrade a customer.

Okay, we are getting closer! If I BUY my own 211, buy a mutiswitch (if needed), pay for an install/do it myself -- are there any additional programming fees to add another receiver?

You'll pay an extra $7 per month for programming for an additional HD receiver ($5/month for an SD receiver). Whether you own or lease the receiver doesn't matter; you'll always pay an additional monthly programming fee for mirroring your programming to receivers beyond the first one.

Depending on what dish you have, you may not need anything but the receiver and some coax. The 1000.2 dish supports 3 receivers by itself...

Okay, thank-you! I do have a 1000.2, I guess I will just have to connect the coax currently going to the SD TV to the switch from the Dish.
