All,

I have tried to get a 2nd DirecTV HD DVR unit for our bedroom, but the DirecTV representative insists that I need someone to come out and install a whole new dish and DVR unit for me.

I've already go the new dish and an HR21-700 unit in our living room, which is working great. All I need is a new unit for our bedroom to replace our old DirecTV HD TiVO unit.

Is there any way to get just the receiver and not have to have the installer come out?

Thanks!

I just completed almost the exact same scenario. I had a HR20 in my living room and a Tivo HR10-250 in my bedroom. I called DTV and asked what they could do to upgrade my Tivo to an HR20/21. At first they said it would cost $199. I asked if i could get some kind of discount since I had been such a good long term customer. They said they could take $100 off. They sent me the new unit (I had to pay tax and shipping) and never mentioned needing to have someone install it. I just got done installing it and it works great.

I'm not sure why they insisted on having someone come out to install it and a new dish. I already had a 5 LNB Slimline dish. I installed my own Zinwell multiswitch since I have a third receiver in my office and needed 5 lines. Maybe if you called back and got a different CSR you would get a different answer.

I thought I read that alot of people were getting their 10-250 replaced with a HD DVR for free.

I had already used this Tivo to get a discount on my first HR20 about a year ago. Then I left the Tivo activated. The CSR tried to get a free replacement approved, but since I had already used this Tivo to get a discounted replacement in the past, the best she could do was to take $100 off. I thought that was fair.

Just go to BB or Costco and avoid what I went thru.

I too just completed almost the exact same scenario, and I had some problems. I had arranged a good price and D* was to ship me a HR-- They did it came and was a refurb with no BBCs, it was useless without them. Called and was told it should have been a new HR and a second Hr was shipped. This one was new but alas it too had no BBCs.:nono2: Now all along I had been hoping to get the HR22 and its larger HD, so I called D* and got enough credits to almost offset the cost of the HR22 i bought at Besy Buy. So what ever you do just make sure it will have the BBCs.

I think they dont always update your Dish status. The website insists I need professional install for a Slimline dish whenever I try to order any HD receivers from the website...so obviously they think I do not have a slimline (even though I do and have an HR21!)

On three separate occasions I pleaded with the CSR’s to just ship me the receivers because I already had a 5LNBdish, but they claimed it was a “highly technical device” that required professional installation. Luckily, the installers in my area have always shown up on-time and done a good job. My last HR20 was ordered via the D* website and they shipped it to me. Not that I did, but had I wanted professional installation, they would have charged an extra $100. Gee, a few months go by and all the sudden it’s not longer such a highly technical device? :)

Just this morning I called up to inquire about replacing my HR10-250 with something newer. I was hoping for something discounted, but I had already "swapped" the HR10-250 back in June for a new HR20-700 for free. I never mentioned anything to the CSR about the previous freebe, just said I had heard that they were replacing HR10's with HR20's for free to try and get rid of the old HR10's.

I didn't volunteer that the HR10 had actually died a few days ago (disk problems) and was useless for me now (no insurance).

Sure enough after looking around for a few minutes she said they would ship out a free HR2x (even free shipping). That makes two free hr2x upgrades from the same HR10! She said I could keep the HR10 and activate it later if I wanted.

She asked if I needed installation, and I said no, I'll just a simply disconnect one and reconnect the other.

I fully expect to get a refurb, but hey for free I'll take what they offer :)

Oh, and I have been getting the courtesy HD channels (HDNM, UHD, etc) for more then the 3 free months still for free. I kind of expect this to go away also with the removal of the HR10 from the account :(

And we should applaud this kind of deception? :nono2:
