Several possibilities for the problem with different solutions.
One might be how you connect to the DVD recorder (RCA/S-Video) compared to the TV (coax). Your TV may not convert coax in to S-Video out (just passes out the S-Video in you select from Line 1 / Line 2. A VCR would convert coax to RCA (but might add Macrovision uglies) so try sending the 622's coax to the VCR's coax in and its coax out on to the TV. Use the VCR RCA output to feed the DVDR input and see what you get.
Try recording TV2 to the VCR or DVDR right at the 622 using RCA jacks.
Keep them in the bedroom and see what it takes to display some DVDR menu on the TV and record that to a VCR tape. If you can get that to work, does it still work when you only connect the DVDR to the TV with coax?
Run the 622 coax to a splitter that feeds the TV and also the DVDR/VCR so you don't use the TV's OUTPUT.
