I now have a Vip 622 and my phone line is not easily accessible as of right now. When my TV's are turned on, I get a message on the screen requesting me to plug in a phone line for the software to update. How can I get this message off the screen (aside from actually pluggin in an operational phone line)? THANK YOU for any help....

My original 942 had a broken modem, so it wouldn't recognize the phone line. The only way I could get the message to disappear was to call up Dish and agree to the extra $5 a month "no phone" charge, then they set a flag and I never saw the message again.

I imagine it's the same way with the 622, since it's similar software, etc. etc...

I am trying to avoid that very phone call so I'm hoping someone has found an alternative solution....

Sorry. Dish's policy is you need a phone line connected. Eventually (and soon) they will notice that your receiver isn't making the required calls and you will be billed the $5 anyways. If you can't connect a phone line you might as well just make the call and get it over with.

I would say the short answer here is NO.. Nothing you can do to get rid of the message. Plug the phone in. Or make the call to Dish to tell them that you have no phone to plug in.. But short of that you are stuck with the message

Radio Shack sells a through the power line phone connector. There are two parts of the unit. One you plug into the power near the phone outlet and connect it to the phone outlet. The other unit you plug into the power near the STB and connect it to the STB phone connector. They are kind of pricy at $89 but they save $5 a month.

Just make sure that the jack is modem quality. The lower grade ones are fine for voice but may not work for this application.

$5 a month for having no phone? And you only have 1 receiver? That sounds like a dumb policy to me. Is that like some kind of insurance pool against people stealing PPV or something? There has to be a more customer friendly solution, like no phone no PPV unless you order from the website or something.

I have a similar problem with the phonelines on my 2nd receiver. I run a long modular phone cord to it once a month and let it connect to the system. But at mom's that wouldn't work. Her house is like 100 years old and nobody ever cared to run a line upstairs that I know of. Oddly, thanks to today's technology there's a cordless phone extention up there now and that works fine.

I've never tried one of those outlet phonelines so I can't say how well it might work but a lot of people seem to use them so I guess it works. I have Vonage and I'm not sure if that would work for me or not. Anyone know?

In the olden days if you wanted service on two tv sets you had to buy two receivers and pay a $5 mirroring fee. Then Dish came out with a single box that would run two tv sets. They made a deal that as long as you keep a phone connected they will waive the mirroring fee you would normally have had to pay. This seems like a reasonable offer to me.

Vonage should work fine as long as you make sure its not using compression. As I understand Vonage you just need to log into the website and change your bandwidth to the 90Kpbs option.
