I a sporadic problem. I have discussed it here on previous occasions and gotten a bit of relieve but the problem reoccurs sporadically and perhaps increasing in frequency.

The whole system hangs up with a "downloading guide" screen. To-have-been-recorded programs have been lost.

About once a week. Perhaps increasing in frequency. Persons here suggested a hard reboot with fixes the immediate problem after several minutes but then it happens again and then again.

The number on the black box is 522. The location is out in the desert where there are no trees or weather. The problem happen in the early morning when temperatures are mild.

What do I attempt next?

It seems that the problem is occuring in early morning b/c that's when it's downloading the guide data. Can you change the time to download information on your model? I know you can with a 622 but not sure with the 522. Change the 'update' time to sometime in the afternoon and then actually watch to see what it does. If it locks again in the afternoon, then it's a software problem. If it doesn't lock up in the afternoon (but continues) to lock up in the early morning hours, then you could have a hardware problem that is being caused by change in temperature (although this would be the less-likely of the two)... but not impossible.

If it's a software problem, you MIGHT be able to have them redownload the software to your receiver--perhaps something was corrupted when your software was last updated.

Can you change the time to download information on your model? ... not sure with the 522. Change the 'update' time...

I have not been able to find a place to change update time.

Can anyone provide details on where to look for this option?
