While watching a recording late last night, I got a prompt asking if I wanted to download the latest software update. I declined.

There's heavy rain in the forecast, and I don't wanna DL during a time where they might be an interruption. I tried forcing a DL with a red button restart and entering 02468, which worked last winter. It didn't work this time around.

Has the code or method changed? Please tell me how to force a download of the new software on an HR20-700.

No, you have it right. Make sure you start pressing as soon as the blue lights come on after the reset. Also make sure you're pressing the buttons deliberately and slowly. One other thing, if you're in IR, try RF, and vice versa - people have different levels of success either way.

First off check the info screen by pressing the info button for 3 seconds. See if you have software 0x0254. If so you have the newest software. It will keep trying and probably downloaded some time after you stopped watching TV.

As for how to force it, yes you want to reboot and press 02468 when you get the blue DIRECTV welcome screen.

BTW you are much better off doing a menu restart instead of doing a RBR. You should only do that if the unit becomes unresponsive.

Why?

Because like a PC it is not good to just cut the power because of the hard drive. By doing a menu restart it shuts things down right like a PC and starts back up.
