I recorded a few movies on this weekend's free preview and realized that I will probably delete most of them without watching because of time constraints. I realized that I watch less than 10% of the available channels. DiscoverHD has been getting most of my viewing time lately, followed by HDNet. I also watch SciFi, USA, Comedy, History, PBS, a couple of the locals, and one superstation, take your pick.

Events sometimes lead me to HNN, ESPN or TWC. My wife watches Home and Garden.

That's 14 channels. I set DVR timers to catch the shows I want, and rarely channel surf. The only TV I watch in real time is the morning news at 6 AM, while I am getting ready for work. I record the evening news because I am rarely home in time to catch it, and am normally in bed before the late news.

Am I a typical viewer? I suspect not, because I don't watch many top rated shows. That's not because I avoid them, but three hours of TV a night is a big tube night for me. Two hours is more typical, which lets me squeeze in three 40-minute prime time shows by fast forwarding past the commercials, or two hours of commercial-free programming. I see magazine articles about CSI-Whatever, but I'm more of a Dr. Who kind of guy.

So what about you folks? Are you getting a big bang out of the free preview? Do you have multiple TVs and multiple watchers in the house? I hear stories about kids parking in front of the set for hours, but my 15 year old nephew rarely turns the TV on.

I live with my mom, there’s two of us in the house and two TV sets, a 48” Sony SDTV in the living room and I have a 42” Sony 16:9 HDTV in my bedroom. We both watch quite a bit of TV, but our tastes have nothing in common, she’s a 57 year old female, and I’m a 21 year old male.

For High Def

My most viewed channel by far is CBS HD. I record 14 primetime network shows a week, 11 of them are on CBS, plus NFL on CBS. NBC HD for Sunday Night Football, ABC HD for a few network shows, ESPN HD for Monday Night Football, Sunday Night Baseball and NFL Primetime. Any MLB/NHL coverage on InHD or HD Net. I also watch Yankees games on YES HD, In Theaters on InHD and Get Out on HD Net. And can't forget about The Sopranos on HBO.

For Standard Def

Comedy Central for South Park, FX for The Shield, Cartoon Network for the 3AM showing of Family Guy, various shows on Food Network, Fox Sunday Night, Fox News Channel and regional cable channel RNews for news, Stand ups on HBO Comedy, Classic Hard Rock Videos on VH1 Classic.

I channel surf a lot, and since I have all 44 movie channels, there's always something semi interesting on, even if I see 5 minutes of a movie and it looks good I'll get it on DVD. A few times a month I'll check out and see what's playing On Demand. Usually I get Crank Yankers on Comedy Central On Demand, and The Jetsons on Cartoon Network On Demand. There are times I will turn on the Music Choice channels and leave the TV on and read the on screen facts about the band, don’t do that too often for too long though, I don’t want the backdrop pattern burned into my new TV :)

My mom on the other hand is the complete opposite. She’s glued to Home Shopping Network, America’s Store and QVC, doesn’t watch any sports and unless it’s a Lifetime Movie she doesn’t watch many real movies. I don’t know how many times I’ve walked through the living room and she’s watching some late 80s/early 90s movie on TBS or TNT and the same exact movie happens to be on one of the oddball Cinemax’s or Showtime’s and she’d rather watch the cut up commercial ridden versions. She also watches what’s left of that reality crap.

I’m not exactly a typical viewer either, I mean I’ve never watched fake reality shows like Survivor or The Amazing Big Fat Obnoxious Greek Bachelor Loser who Married an Ice Skating Swan From Temptation Island. Don’t watch the MTV Pimp My Mom or Date My Car shows. I absolutely hate the crap on MTV and VH1. I watch a lot of Network programming that has gotten canceled over the years, because people would rather watch reality crap or the 20th reincarnation of Law And Order.

Hmmm...

The network shows in our house are the CSIs, Heroes, How I Met Your Mother, Smallville, Lost and Jericho.

The cable shows are mostly SciFis Friday lineup, either the Stargate twins or now the Battlestar Galactica / Dr Who tandem. We also catch stuff from the History Channels and the Discovery nets. Throw in some sports and the occasional HBO show (Bill Mahre, Deadwood, etc) and that about covers it.

I have never heard of Heroes or How I Met Your Mother.

I haven't gotten into Lost. I figure I'll catch it in reruns, hopefully in HD.

I think I heard something about Jericho that sounded kind of interesting. I may check it out.

Just last night I deleted half a dozen shows off the DVR to free up space. My new favorite show is DiscoverHD's Atlas of the World. The premier on China was great, the second show on Italy was not so good, but I love HD travel shows.

How I Met Your Mother is a comedy in it's second season. I'd gotten burned out on comedies over the years but I like this one.

Heroes is NBC's genre series that seems to be inspired by X-Men minus the spandex, about people who start developing abilities due to evolutionary genetic development (mutations?). And not all are 'good'.

Network shows: Simspons, Family Guy, American Dad, 'Til Death, Amazing Race, Jericho, Lost & Heroes.

Cable networks: Sci-Fi (Doctor Who), Comedy (South Park), Family Net (Lucy Show and other classic shows they show weekdays at 4:30), American Life (Honeymooners, My Favorite Martian, FBI, other shows) ... I definitey prefer the classic shows ... , Millitary History (Escape!, Spy Stories), TCM (Cartoon Alley, Festival of Shorts, movies.), FMC (movies). Plus various programs on other educational channels like Discovery, Disovery Science, etc.

I watch quite a few movies OnDemand (Starz, TMC, Showtime.)

Music Choice: Classic Country & Solid Gold Oldies.

I don't watch sports unless the Redskins are in the Playoffs. And that doesn't look very likely this season the way things are going so far. :)

I upgraded to DISH HD ViP622 and bought my HD plasma in July 2006. Since then most of my watching has been high definition channels/shows/events. It is rare that I will have anything on in SD nowadays; an exception is the local news (which is not yet HD in Houston). I also have my old 20 inch CRT TV hooked up as TV2 (sitting near TV1) and it may be playing that local news or the Weather Channel. Alternatively I will have my plasma playing one of the relaxation DVD's from VAT19.

I watch WAY too much TV. My screensaver channel is "The Science Channel" Essentially when there is nothing else on and when I am doing something else but still want to see some TV.

I, like most Americans, watch mostly the big 4 with some PBS (Nova, Frontline, American Experience, TOH, and the most educational program on PBS, The Red Green Show -- too bad it's now out of production) and one WB/CW program(Smallville)

Channels I watched during the last month:
ABC/CBS/NBC/Fox/PBS/CW
The Science Channel
Discovery Times
Documentary Channel
NGC
HBO (several flavors)
Showtime (several flavors)
Starz/Encore (several flavors)
TCM
Fox Movies
TNT
Spike
Fox News
TVEi
TVN
Telemundo PR (news)
CNN
Cartoon Network (got to have my Robot Chicken)

I get my money's worth out of AEPw/DL Bonus!

See ya
Tony
