While comparison shopping between DirecTV, Dish and Time Warner Cable yesterday the Dish rep told me that a new lease is limited to 4 TVs (or rooms, I forget the exact wording but it'll be clear momentarily). I said I am considering an HD DVR, two SD DVRs and one SD rcvr -- four TVs in four separate rooms. He said the most they could lease me is one dual-tuner HD DVR and one dual-tuner SD DVR. Further questioning revealed that in each case one TV will connect directly to the DVR via HDMI, component, or Y/C plus audio -- like I would expect; but the other TV associated with that DVR would have to be connected via coax and tuned to channel 3 or 4.
I said I really didn't want anyone in the house sharing the HD DVR (even though I understand its "secondary" tuner output is SD, has its own remote, etc.) but he said since it has a modulated coax out that counts as a potential "room" or "TV" and therefore uses up one of the four potential TV connections allowed for in a lease.
I asked how many coax cables run from the dish to each receiver and must a separate coax cable be run out from the DVR to the "secondary" TV located in another room? He couldn't tell me.
