Hi all,
so I'm in Chicago, and I get weather fade constantly. Normally, I get strong signals, but at the slightest storm, the signal is gone.
I'm extra curious because I recently noticed that my installer, instead of giving me my own dish, hooked me up to a neighbor's dish and put in a new unpowered splitter. Along with the neighbors, we have 4 or 5 TVs hooked up (including at least 2 HD DVRs), so I wasn't sure if this is why we get extra weather problems..
Thanks!

I don't think that is the problem, but it is strange. If I was your neighbor, I would not be happy they tapped my dish for you. I have 2 HD DVR's & 2 SD DVR's, & live in SW Fla. We get major storms just about every day in the summer & very rarely lose picture. If we do it only lasts a couple of minutes. I get much more rain fade from OTA than from the Sat.

Almost never.

Before I upgraded to the 5LNB Slimline from the 3LNB dish, I had rain fade once or twice a month. Not real bad but enough to be annoying.

At the same time the new dish was installed, my neighbor cut down a tree and now I almost never have weather related issues.

Every once and a while I will get some blocking/pixelation if the storm is comming from the south and is reall heavy.

Other than that I have clear receiption all the time.

Whenever a Thunderstorm passes south of me. Usually, storms large enough to warrant severe thunderstorm warnings. Regular rain and snow have little effect.

I also have a 6' dish. Even on strong signals, I loose KU on it during the same storms. Only C band survives, and I wouldn't want to have a 6'x18' dish for Directv.
...Well, I would, but my neighbors wouldnt...

imagine the signal levels if you used Arricebo

Do you lose everything or certain channels?

Which do you lose first?

What are you signal strengths for each tuner with clear weather.

Most of the time, our weather comes in from the southwest, right in line with the aim of the dish. Basically, we get an inch of rain for every minute of rain fade (or at least that’s my very unscientific observation). Really, I can’t remember a time when we lost signal for more than 5 minutes at a time. Occasionally, we get the odd storm that comes from a different direction and while those can be really nasty in terms of wind, they don’t seem to cause much rain fade.

BTW here are my signals:

Everynow and then, not too often though. Has to be a pretty good storm.

Family members in Florida have directv as well and they loose it even less in even bigger storms, their signals are similar (90s) to mine, and its the same slimline 5 dish...seems like being closer to the equator helps, maybe because of the angle they use.

It had to be a real strong storm to the south to cause any problems and those are so few and far between it is no issue. For reference I use a DirecTV receiver at work for background music so it is on 10 hours a day, 6 days a week and I doubt I have had 30 minutes of outage over the last year.

I get outages pretty much every time a summer thunderstorm rolls through. My signal strength is good with 101 between 97-100, 103(c) 88-96 and 99(c) 91-95. The locals go out first, then HD channels, and finally the SD channels.

The outages usually don't last long, and much less of a problem than when I had cable (pre-1994)

I would call Directv and tell them that they hooked me up to someone else's dish and that I want my own dish. Make sure that all transponders are coming in good before they leave. They were just being cheap & lazy and you should have told them you wanted your own dish.

Also, high winds which are a result of an approaching storm can cause the dish to move slightly if it is not really secured to its base which can cause misalignment and result in lost signals.

Whenever large thunderstorms pass through (the ones with yellows and reds on the radar) the signal almost always goes out. During a normal rainstorm it is fine. It doesn't really snow here much, but the few times it has I never lost signal. I have never lost an OTA signal due to weather as someone else mentioned, but I'm only about a mile from the transmitters.
