How to check hard drive capacity

5525 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Michael D'Angelo
I'm an old foggy who is struggling with the technology time. I will freely admit I was amazed myself that I could even successfully register here without any issue. But anyway, I have a simple question: how do I check the hard drive capacity of my unit? I have an HR-21 - 700, and am thinking about buying an HR-22 from Costco for my son. Besides opening the receiver up and look at the hard drive itself, is there a setting in the menu options to physically see?

And I just want to say a thank you to everyone here for sharing their information at this forum. I am not very good with these new gadgets, but I was able to walk away with much more knowledge than before I came to this forum. You guys are doing good work.

:welcome_s to DBSTalk!

The HR21's have a 320GB hard drive and 100GB is reserved by DIRECTV, leaving 220GB for personal recording.

The HR22 has a 500GB hard drive and 100GB is reserved by DIRECTV, leaving 400GB for personal recordings.

So the HR22 is almost double the HR21.
Thank you for the response, Michael.

Yes, I have read the hard drive capacity from DBSTalk. I am wondering if there is a way you can see the size of the drive in the menu options. Similar to how in a PC, if you right click on a hard drive in my computer, you can see the size. Thank you again.
Nope, you're stuck with what DirecTV gives you.

That is unless you add a larger external SATA drive to replace the internal drive. Their part stays the same size but you can add much more personal recording space with say a 1 TB eSATA drive.
People don't seem to be understanding the quetion but I do because I have the same concern. Ideally I want PROOF that my HR22 has the 500 gig, short of waiting until it is full of similar programming to my HR20 and comparing the % available bar...

So to reiterate the question, it is not about what the capacity of the internal drive is supposed to be or whether you can swap it internally, the question is whether there is any screen that allows you to see the capacity of the drive confirmed on the unit (i.e. short of manually cracking open the box, voiding the warranty, and looking)?

Well I can tell you that the HR21's definitely have 320GB hard drives. We have done a first look on all 3 and we have pictures of the inside, including the hard drive. There is no reason not to believe that the HR22 does not really have a 500GB hard drive.
