How to force a software update on an old 4700?

(short version of a long story)
My Dish 6000 box seems to have died overnight Friday night. After multiple phone calls back and forth, Dish is sending me a new / refurb 6000 via the extended war. that I have. Great!

Issue: That means no sat. tv until the new box arrives.

Problem: I unplugged the 6000 and re-installed the old Dish 4700 that the 6000 replaced. This 4700 has been sitting on a closet shelf (un-used, not plugged in) for about a year or so. During the RMA process for the 6000, the tech entered all the needed info to activate the 4700 for me.

The 4700 apparently needs a software update, and I can't get it to take the update download. I need ideas on how to get my 4700 to pull down a software update. The only channels I get on the 4700 are the totally free dish channels; like the remote control help, etc. None of my subscribed channels are listed in the guide. It's as if the box thinks I have not yet signed up with dish.

What we (dish and I) have tried:
Multiple remove the smart card, insert the smart card. Multiple check switches (i have a sw64). Multiple check signal strength, check switch, power off the box and wait for 15 to 20 minutes routines. Multiple checks of making sure that I have the download software updates without my permission saved in the menus. Current software rev of the 4700 is 647pccev-n. TS tells me the version number needed starts with P175.

The last (5th or 6th) call to Dish tech support says that most likely the 4700 is bad also?! This unit has been sitting on a shelf for roughly a year, but it worked flawlessly before I upgraded to the 6000.

Anyone have any ideas on ways to force the 4700 to take a software update / download? Or, am I forced to be without Dish in my living room until the replacement 6000 arrives?

Many Thanks in advance

Thanks LadyTalia, I'll try that
Since there are no 4700s left in the field as they were ALL upgraded to 4900s others have reported their receivers will not take a download. I cant confirm this but they claim the have to be replaced.

Let us know what happens I am curious.
Hi Bob;

thanks for that info, I did not know that. Just curious, how is / was a 4700 upgraded to a 4900? Is it a box swap, or is it just software?

thx
4700 upgraded to a 4900 is just a software download.
Thanks for the help folks! I did the 119 and transponder 19 thing and it still didn't work. Not sure why this thing will not pull down the upload since it worked fine before. Guess I have another reciever to RMA at some point.

For the moment at least, problem is solved. I also had a old DishPlayer (one of the original / first ones) in storage. I plugged that one in and had dish activate it just as a receiver without any DP functions. The DP seems to be working and I'm getting all my subbed channels. As long as nothing goes wrong, this will be my solution until the new 6000 gets here.

Thanks again for all your help and advice.
Supposedly the 4700 no longer exists so theres no software for 4700s to download. Its the first time a model of receivers ceased to exist...
Where the model of receiver was converted to a different model, if you did not upgrade on the 1st go round and a new software release was spooled after for the new model, the old receiver will not upgrade. Requires an RMA replacement. i.e. What Bob said... :)
very strange..
should be Psometing anyhow - the existing software..
Can you get any channels with the 4700 at all?
On the bottom of Sys Info screen: Location ID.. What does it say there under Loc. ID?
Did you go to the menu and took: "automatically download new version" or you still have "Ask my permission before download"
(if so you should change to "automatically" - insert card ...change to "automatically" )
But to get upgrade after (if there is one still in Stream) - i think you can do it without the card in the receiver - just connect satellite feed (oh is it connected properly and you have a feed :) at all ) - so just connect sat. feed - no card in is ok - power off IRD with remote..and let it be..just wait - could be 20 mins or so..but what do you have to lose :) - leave it longer ...leave it overnight or something - by the way if it is taking the upgrade - the green light will go on...and stay on (do not touch nothing at this time)...When the green light is off - you more likely have taken the upgrade...

Good luck..

I gave up on the 4700 and reactivated an old displayer I had lying around. on the 4700: Yes, the download without my permission was saved. Yes, I could get a couple of channels like remote control help, and the like. I believe I was getting all the totally free channels from Dish. Like when you are just hooking up the reciever for the first time before you actually have a account with Dish. I never did get it to download the update, no matter what I did. Smart card in, smart card out, no difference. Someone did reply to me on the other forum website with a set of codes to punch in to force the reciever to reset and force it to download software. Unfortunately, I got that message after I setup the DP as a temporary machine and I'm too lazy to switch things back just to try those codes. I printed them off and will save them for future reference if I do plug that unit back in sometime. Let me know if you want that info. The printout is downstairs.

thanks again

hehe - i see...
was just interested to Hear though what Location ID was on Sys info screen...because if it was something as "000000" or
"000001" or something like that (instead of some random numbers/letters combo of values - then more likely this IRD got ECMed (somehow), who knows when...and that could explain for you only getting Free Channels only such as Remote Control help line, etc..
If your Location Id would have been something like (only a "made up" example): "B4C5D6etc7" (or something like that - basically anything rather then 000000 or 000001 or someting of this pattern) - then your machine is not ECMed ..and somehow you should be able to get the upgrade (even if it would involve "punching in some codes" that you described above :)
