I'm one of those people who have patiently (some may say foolishly) waited for a D* Tivo in HD. I'm finally ready to take the plunge but would still like to be able to access the stored programming on my old SD Tivo's.
They're owned, so DTV won't confiscate them.
What, if anything, can I do to accomplish this? I don't want to keep them on my account, so they'll be off the satellite feed.

Sorry if this is asked and answered. I tried searching but didn't find it.

Thanks,
Don

ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Rats, that's a shame. Seems like a while back I saw a comment stating how to do it, but dumb me didn't write it down and now I can't find it.
Seems it had something to do with the order in which it was disconnected... or something like that.

I believe the older DirecTivo boxes can be disconnected from the satellite feed BEFORE you order them deactivated, and you will be able to continue to watch recordings that are on them. Go to www.tivocommunity.com for more information on that equipment.
Yep, disconnect cables THEN call & deactivate

None of this is necessary. The old DTiVos will play any already-recorded programs without a satellite connection or activation. This is not true of HR2x, HR3x or the THR22 (the latter is a guess on my part).
Thanks Steve,
These are QUITE old. I bought them both back in 2004.

My wife will be very happy. She has lots of Desperate Housewives she need to catch up on left on the old one.

LOL... my wife is trying to clear off (i.e. watch) the shows from her old TIVO as I read/write this... desperate housewives is what she is watching!

What you want to do is disconnect the DirecTiVo from the satellite and phone lines prior to "deactivation". That way, you still keep access to the programming. Then, when you power up the DirecTiVo and it does a search for signal, hit the DirecTV button to access the main menu, then all of your pre-recorded stuff.

Tip: If you have Netflix, Desperate Housewives all but this season available for streaming.

I would imagine you are suffering from wishful thinking or you were reading documentation involving stand-alone (SA) TiVos.

DIRECTV DVRs (TiVo-powered or otherwise) cannot play each other's disc-based files. Only through the magic of Whole Home DVR Service (unimaginably not available on the DIRECTiVo HD) can content from one DIRECTV DVR be viewed on another DIRECTV DVR (assuming WHDS is supported by both DVRs).

That is not what he is asking. He wants to know if he can still access his recorded programs on his old TiVo's. The answer to that is YES.

Not sure why the misinformation continues; Steve has this one right [edited to add: and I see Herdfan just confirmed it in the above message]. You can take an old DTivo out of the closet years after deactivation, hook it up to a TV (no dish needed) and play back your programs. As long as the hard drive and other hardware holds up.

With some HR2Xs you can do the disconnect before the deactivation signal goes out and retain the programming; I've seen it last for 6 months, I doubt there's any there's any end point.

I'm told the THR22 and some HR2Xs lose the ability instantly and unplugging doesn't help, but I have no first-hand experience.
