At some point since Friday AM new software downloaded to my HR-20/100. I returned home this morning (Tuesday) to see the bright blue ring to signify new software. Yippee, NOT!

When I turned on the TV it was in the middle of a reset (on it's own) upon completion of reset programming is viewable from 1-5 minutes before a reset starts again all by itself.

I did a reset of my own and forced a software download (I don't know what version it replaced, but it downloaded x235). The continual resetting continued. I unplugged the unit after picture returned from a reset and let it "sit" of a few hours and the fun continues. The newest software X0254 is not available to me yet, is my issue something this may fix?

Any help and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It sounds like something else is going on, and you've taken all the diagnostic steps you can take.

Thanks Stuart,

This is my punishment for leaving town and missing last weekends CE download.

Before I call DirecTV... am I looking at some type of hardware failure? What will it cost me to "fix"? Any info to help inform me before I call would be great.

FYI... my signal strength on all birds is great, all other receivers (3 non-HD) are working fine.

Replacing the receiver should cost no more than $19.95 shipping and handling. If I had to guess, there is some sort of fault in the hard drive keeping it from booting.

Sometimes when a Power Supply is going bad it outputs power which is outside of the range for the DVR. When that happens the DVR automatically reboots to try to resolve a significant problem which will not be corrected until the Power Supply Unit is either tweaked (yes there are ways to adjust it) or replaces.

I went ahead and called DirecTV tonight (I wasn't the only one there was a 10 minute wait) and thanks to several years of reading great posts on this site I had already done the potential remedy to my problem up to a "reset everything". I hadn't done this yet in hopes that there were other steps that I didn't know about. No such luck.

While I have to reset my favorites and lost a couple of shows I have now enjoyed 15 minutes of continuous HD TV.

If this doesn't work they will have to send me a replacement.

I'll update if the problem returns otherwise thanks again for all of the help.

The reboots (must have returned at some point during the night) are back and soon I'll be back on the phone with DirecTV.

quick question... does this sound like a hard drive issue and if so can I "bypass" by adding an external drive?

That would be a good test, but I'd still get the box replaced.

I just had one of my HR20's replaced for random reboots - the hard drive was going.

Update... I called DirecTV again about my rebooting machine and "Mike" read the notes from last nights call. He then wanted me to do a drive reformat by pushing the record button and down button at the same time for 12 seconds when I see black after the "almost there a few more seconds screen" the drive would reformat. I can get the record light to come on and when it goes off I can hear the hard drive then it goes to the welcome screen. Mike could not tell me if I should be seeing the welcome screen and didn't know anyone who did. He told me if I returned to TV in less than an hour or two it didn't reformat and just reset and to try again. I told him he should spend time on this sight learning about things he should know so he could do his job and that I would come here and find out what he should already know.

So my latest questions are... how do I do a reset on an HR-20/100? Is there any chance this is going to solve my reset problem?

If this doesn't work they'll do a swap.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Everyone,

I am having the same problem with my HR20-100, before this, it was rock solid. However, since we had snow here on March 2, it has been doing random reboots and restarting itself. Also, it has missed recordings. The error message was cancelled because of unexpected error (2004). I don't know what that means. Then when it does record a show, when I press play, it immediately goes to the do you want to delete it screen, and does not play the recording.

I haven't called Directv yet, because I don't won't to be on the phone for 2 hours, just for them to tell me to unplug it, which I have done or check the cables, or reset the receiver. I have done all of that and the problem persists. I haven't done a reset everything yet. I was hoping not to have to do it.

I just receive the software update to Ox2d7 on March 10, the problem started after March 2.

Any thoughts - hardware or software.

PS I also have an HR22-100 and I am having no problems with it.

Thanks for your assistance.
