Just switched back to Directv yesterday. I left two years ago to take advantage of the comcast hd dvr. I hope someone could help me out. The HR-20 does not seem to ouput 5.1 audio. I have the settings right. Does anyone know what if any programs are brodcast in 5.1. I did some surfing last night no 5.1. I called this morning and asked the same question. The rep knew nothing about audio. I know most hd programing comes in 5.1 from comcast why not directv?

Your local HDTV channels are usually DD5.1 for their primetime HD broadcasts. The only other channels that sometimes have DD5.1 are the pay movie channels, like HBO and Showtime. It would be nice if there was a test channel that always broadcast DD5.1 audio.

I get plenty of DD 5.1...have you:

1. Gone into the menu and turned it on?

2. Checked ESPN-HD or Universal HD?

I just checked ESPN-HD SportCenter and it is showing DD 5.1 3/2.1 on my Onkyo Integra DTS 7.1 receiver (optical connection from HR20 to the Receiver/Amp)

Another thing you can try once you are sure you are tuned to a DD 5.1 source is a red button reset. Some people reported that they had to do a red button reset before the DD setting change "took". I did not have to do this.

It is hocked up to my sony reciver with a optical plug. The main question is are you sure your hr-20 is sending 5.1 and not prologic. The network shows last night wher all prologic. They are all brodcast in 5.1.

Thanks guys, I went into set up and I had it set right. I set it to off. Then went back in and set it to on. It kicked in.

Nice unit ha ha.

One more thing is it best to run in in native or not. When it is on it takes a long time to tune.

What I do:

Turn Native mode OFF

Set the output resolution of the HR20 to match the Native display capability of your HDTV. Mine is 720P, yours could be that or 1080i (the most common ones). You won't have the delay and the pix quality should be very good.

Now, when you have time, experiment with the output resolution (staying with fixed output resolution) and see which looks better on your TV, 720P or 1080i. It's all a matter of which scalar works better and your own subjective opinion.

Hey guys,

Brand new here. Came looking for an answer to this very question.

I just switched from Comcast Digital (HD-DVR) to D* because I was getting tired of the crappy service from Comcrap (repeated signal drops, squirrely remote/box interaction, etc.).

With Comcast I saw that every(?) channel broadcast the sound in DD5.1. With the new service from D*, I have yet to see any audio signal which lights up my DD5.1 light on my receiver, regardless of channel. Sound exudes from all 6 speakers, and by ear I can't tell that it is not 5.1, but that light doesn't come on.

I've tried all the fix-its I've seen on this and AVS forums, including:

>on-off-on-off-etc. the digital audio out setting in HR20 menu
>HR20 button reset, menu reset, and unplug
>It's not a HR20 glitch because this is the second box we've had
>It's not the optical cable because its the same as used with Comcast DVR.

Any help?

Equipment: Kenwood VR-5080 receiver (set to auto-detect audio signal) - Vizio 50" plasma - HR20 sat box.

Connections: Audio, Receiver-Satbox: optical TOSlink - Video, TV-Satbox: HDMI
