I am sure I know the answer but am going to ask to verify.

If I set the HR10-250 for one sat & ota. Can I record 2 channels at the same time on the OTA?

Not sure I understood the question, but I have two satellite feeds and an OTA feed hooked up to my HR10-250 and have no problem recording from two different OTA channels at the same time. I can't watch a different satellite or OTA channel while they are recording though as it will ask me to stop recording on one of them.

I think the question is, if you only have 1 satellite input and an ota if you can record 2 ota channels at the same time. If that is the case the answer is not very easily.

OK, let's make this clearer .....

If you have one satellite dish cable connection plus an OTA antenna, your HR10-250 can record ....
* one satellite channel, or
* one OTA channel
It cannot record both at the same time.

When you go through the set up you select 2 inputs. You will have a nag message appear often that says no signal on sat 2, and many sat recordings will be blank because the stb will try to record shows off of the second sat input. So it is a pain but it is possible.

exactly.

the work around is to turn to the sat channel you want to record, wait for the show to start and then press record. This defeats a big reason to have a dvr but it works.

I do not understand why it cannot record 2 ota programs at the same time since there is only one OTA input any way.

You can record two OTA at the same time.

There is only one OTA going into the HR10 but inside it spilt into two.

Here's the way it works:

One OTA input, which is internally split.
Two DirecTV inputs.

The software sees two virtual tuners (assuming it's configured for dual feeds, of course), and each of these virtual tuners can tune to either satellite or OTA channels. If you have the software configured for only one feed, then only one of these virtual tuners is available, so only one thing at a time (either OTA or satellite) can be tuned in.
