Last Saturday I went to turn on my HR and TV and there was a 771 error code. Call DTV and they couldn't fix it. Had the service guy come out for $25. Turns out to be the box was the issue, not the signal. He swaps out my HR20 with a HR24. All my recordings were ok including accessing my 2TB sata. Today I plug back in my sata and it updates the software and shows I have 55% on my drive but it will not play back anything on the HR24.

A few questions:
1. If the sata holds programming on an older DVR, shouldn't it work globally?
2. Are my programs hosed?
3. Were there any options to save the programs on my old HR20 before the tech took it away.

Did my box having the 771 error have anything to do with the standby mode?

No. The programming on the hard drive is encrypted based on the DVR it was recorded on. This has been a bone of contention for a long time. Many of us feel it should be encrypted by account so any DVR on the account could play back the pre-recorded content.

Yes.

If the HR20 could playback programs from the external hard drive the only option I know of would have been to get an Hauppage HD-PVR to connect the component output of the DVR to the HD-PVR and capture the recorded content on the DVR to the PC hard drive.

Hello joshalee,

I have the Hauppauge PVR 1212. You could record your programs to a pc hard drive but the recording time element would be very long for all of your recorded programs. The procedure is to playback the programs using the DVR that recorded the program through the PVR using component cables and software such as ArcSoft TME capture software (Total Media Extreme comes with the PVR) will be recorded to a hard drive. After all the programs are on the hard drive that you want they can be burned to dvd's and the DVR is no longer necessary. I hope this helps.
