HR20/21 + Slingbox + IR/RF+ IR IN

Hello All,

I have done a bunch of searching, but I can't find the answer to this question. I have seen many times that if the HR20/21 (I have one of each in the house) is set to RF mode on the remote, the Slingbox won't work with the IR emitters. But, here's my questions I can't find the answer to, if the HR20/21 is set to RF Mode, does the "IR In" port on the back still work? If this does work, what kind of cable/connectors do I need to hook this up to my Slingbox? I read a few posts, and I think I need a 1/8" to 3/32" mono cable. Is this correct?

Now, another issue, I would like to share said receiver with the upstairs bedroom and the downstairs theater. I have the remote in the bedroom in RF Mode so I can control it from upstairs. Now I'd like to control it downstairs with the Slingbox and a Harmony Remote. If the IR In port works, that'd be great, but there is still an issue of the Harmony remote. I had a IR extender working on the last receiver, but when I tried it with the HR20, it really didn't perform well at all. What are others doing?

BTW: Does anyone know how to do a search for exact phrase in these forums? Like on Google, I just put quotes around the phrase, and it will search for just that. Anyway to do that on these forums? or any forums?

Thanks for any suggestions or help!

Basically, I don't think you can control an HR20 with IR and RF at the same time.
do you mean you have a HR21PRO? (only one with remote connection)
also taping off most of the IR reciever seems to be the trick..
I actually have a fairly similar setup to yours. I have an HR21 + Slingbox Pro in an upstairs bedroom and an HR21 downstairs set on RF. The slingbox pro is connected to the HR21 with the IR blaster (I have to leave the unit on IR) and the ethernet is connected to the HR21 passthrough (which is nice because it means I only need one cable going to the wall). My HR21 doesn't have IR IN, I believe that is only available on the HR21 PRO.

I also have a harmony remote but for your information, I will tell you that D*'s RF is proprietary and will not work with any remote except those made by directv. Sorry, thems the breaks.

In order to watch the upstairs HR21 downstairs, I just use a laptop and connect to the slingbox. Hopefully D* will wise up and enable multi-room viewing (MRV) on the HR21/20 at some point. Also, perhaps Sling will actually release the Slingcatcher which would enable the same type of functionality.
I bet I just have the HR21, no PRO model. It looks like I need to rethink how I have things setup, or just buck up and get another receiver. Thing is, I don't use the theater that often, but do like having TV there when I want to watch TV on it.

I respect that you control your HR21 with a laptop upstairs, but I really think that's too much work for me.

thanks for all the reply's
An often requested feature upgrade for the HR2x series - being able to use both IR and RF.

The R15/R16 series do work with both (if you never change them to rf - it's active to start with). Once you change to rf, then they are locked to one or the other. I think that is actually an unintentional goof in the software.

Here is my setup;
HR21-700 downstairs working on IR, controlled with a Harmony remote.
Slingbox and powerline ethernet are also downstairs.

From one of the unused audio/video out sets (red/white/yellow) on the HR21 I have a GE RF modulator (Target $17) connected to a co-ax cable which goes up an outside wall into the upstairs bedroom, to the RF-in on my bedroom TV. The Directv remote is upstairs in IR mode and controls the HR21 through a Terk Leapfrog IR extender, the Directv remote also controls a DVD player and RCA satellite receiver. The co-ax cable run was some work obviously, but everything else is just plug-in.

How are you getting audio/video from your DVR to your remote TV?

PS the Terk works flawlessly.
