I have an enclosed ent center which caused my ViP722 to get pretty hot. I bought some axle caps from Ace to lift it about 1/2" for better underbelly air flow and bought a Thermaltake USB fan to help exhaust air.

My HR20 was getting to about 127 by midday, when the house was at its hottest. I decided to try the fan and caps out to see if I could get the HR20 temp down. With the HR20 raised, and the fan pulling air OUT of the back left vents(facing from front) I was able to get it down to 118 during midday.

After listening to some about how they used laptop coolers, I tried another fan position that seems to be working very well. The fan is centered over the back-left-top vents and is blowing air INTO the dvr housing. The position has put the dvr temp at 109 midday, dropping it from 118 within an hour. I know some claim 127 the norm, but 109 sure aint gonna hurt.

I'm using a USB-powered Targus Chillpad laptop cooler sitting on top of my HR20. Drops the internal temp from ~125º to ~105º and is very quiet.

They're kind of pricey... but they definitely get the job done... and look very nice... they have a blue light on the front as well that matches the hr20's lights nicely...

Those are nice, someone already recommended that to me. Being the Thermaltake is doing a good job, and you cant see how goofy it looks , Ill keep it for now. Still 109 and holding.

Well, those antec coolers pull the air out of the unit and expel it out the back... and the cabinet I'm using it in has an open back... and it looks like yours doesn't... so those might not be ideal for you anyway... oh well... go with what works!

Actually, I do have an opening and that Antec would work well. I may invest in something similar thats 120v for my Onkyo Rcvr. I know they get hot and its normal, but DANG it gets hot.

I understand... I also have a Denon in the same cabinet and bought one for it as well... but I plugged that cooler into the accessory plug on the Denon.. so it only runs when that receiver is on...

litzdog, does the chillpad continue to run if you turn off the HR20? In other words, does the USB port remained powered with the unit switched off? TIA

I also have the Targus chillpad, running 24/7 on or off the USB port does remain powered

just lifting them up a 1/2" does wonders..
also make sure they are not on top of your amplifier.. especialy if it's an Onkyo *)

Monoprice has a 9.99 laptop cooler that fits nicely on top of the HR2x and exhausts either along the front or back. Reduced from about 127 to 117-118 or so.

I really need to add some fans out the back of the entertainment center for the other components.

I also use the Chillpad, upside down on top of my HR20-700. Just plug it in. No need to power down. The only use of the USB port at this time is for powering devices such as this. It has nothing to do with any other electronics in the unit.

My HR20 went from 127 to 105.
