Welcome to the forums, Jeff! :welcome_s

You will be able to use the Tivos as long as they live. If they are the HD ones, they may lose some of the HD channels sometime in the future as D* migrates to the new satellites, but there is no announcement that this will happen. The 5lnb is compatible with all the directv receivers in that they just see the type of dish they can handle (most can only see what looks like a three lnb).

As for when to buy an HR20, a lot depends on your aversion to possible problems and what kind of deal you can arrange with Directv. Since you have Tivos, my standard suggestion is to call until you get the deal you really want on the HR20. Then install the HR20 as a test unit until you are certain it is stable in your environment. (Watch the forums here, you'll know how stable it is becoming for the rest of us.)

And because disk drives do fail, I usually backup record on a second machine anything that is important to my family.

Cheers,
Tom

Both the HR20 and Directivos get their guide info from satellite. The Directivos also get their extended Tivo guide information by tuning to channel 100 every nite and process the data thats embedded in the infomercial. (Directivos can also get some or all the extended info via phone line, but I only had mine connected to a phone line to get a software update approved.) HR20s do not need a phone line for any guide or software information--only to allow PPV via the remote control.

And thanks for the compliment.

Cheers,
Tom

tibber, are you absolutley certain about not needing the phone line, even for setup?
I am thinking about an HR20 but do not have a landline phone so obviously can't plug in.

I know DTV will say it's required but I don't care about PPV (never use it) so don't really need it.
I currently have a DTivo that I had to "hack" to make work without the phone but don't want to go through all that again.
TIA, Troy

Sorry, missed your post until now. Glad houskamp was watchin'.

Welcome to the forums! :welcome_s

Back to your question, I've only used a phone line from time to time to test Caller ID for them's who use it. First 4 months it wasn't attached at all.

And, if you should happen to find that one PPV you just gotta watch (i'm up to 1 every other year or so :) ), then you can use directv's website to order so all your receivers get authorized. I think that's better anyway.

Cheers,
Tom
