Has anyone else noticed a change in black levels (for the better) via HDMI after the "B" release Friday night? Prior to then, the HR20 looked much more contrasty than the HR10, so much so that the black detail was pretty much gone. Now it is much closer to the look on the HR10.

My display is a NEC HT-1100 projector, using DVI in via a DVI to HDMI cable. The HDMI connection from the HR20 runs thru a Denon 5805 for switching.

I told the wife that the picture looked better to me and she had to agree that it did look better to her too. It's just a little better if you ask me.

I was about to make a post lol. I wasnt sure it was me with the excitement of the release, but the picture quality does seem better to me also, and I am using hdmi. I received this box earlier last week as a replacement and thought the pq was better, but it even seemed better after the software release:D . Before when I watched football on nfl network hd, I had to make all sorts of adjustments to get rid of the graininess, but last night it was really nice. I will have to check it out during a basketball game, previously the court would look really bad. Thanks dtv and earl for this software present:lol: glad to see I am not imagining things:lol:

Could the picture quality be due to a change in compression from the Sats?

It looks like D* is working on fixing the local channels. The NFL game last week on our Salt Lake CBS station looked as good from the satellite as it did OTA. I switched back and forth several times and you couldn't see the compression artifacts in the field anymore from D*'s feed and was frankly amazed it looked so good. They were still there on the Fox station. I saw in another forum CBS wasn't happy about D*'s feed and they may have been applying pressure. CBS does own the local affiliate which probably gives them a pretty big stick. The improved picture came before I got 108 and 10b. The funny thing is Fox also owns their affiliate here, but their picture was still bad. Maybe Ruppert has already lost his pull?

I noticed just the opposite, but I'm using component out. We watched Battle Star Galactica on the projector friday night, immediately after updating to 10b. At first I thought the PJ had been reset somehow, because the blacks were completely crushed. Everything was too dark in dark scenes, and too washed in light scenes. I spent a few minutes tweaking things and it never got better. Then I tried watching it downstairs on the CRT and noticed the same issue.
Downloaded the episode and it looked beautiful.

Ran into the same thing again Saturday with another show, oddly enough also recorded off SciFi. Haven't had anything else record so far that has the right content to really test.

I thought the reason it looked better was because I just got a new leather reclining sofa :) Guess not.
