My number in the HR20 DVR sweepstakes came up and it was installed on Monday, but it got me thinking.

Is this a lease or a purchase from D*?

I believe the cost was $199, but I am afraid that my wife, who took the call to set up the install, might have said OK to the lease not realizing that was deal. I know that I leased the HD receiver, as I only wanted it until my DVR arrived, so I am hoping that this DVR is not also leased, especially with the cost.

Aside from calling D*, how can I tell? IOW, are all transactions for the HD20 DVR via D* leases?

Second question, given the CSR Roulette were various people have hooked up deals or rebates, do I have any course of action to maybe renegotiate my fee? Any suggestions?

It's a lease with a 2-yr commitment. I don't think you can "renegotiate" that with DirecTV since you got the HR20 from them. The only way to "buy" is from retailers that will sell to you without the lease commitment, and then they cost several hundred dollars.

So, is this the case if I recently purcahsed one from Best Buy for $299? I wouldn't imagine there's a lease since I wasn't asked for any information with regard to my DTV subscription. I've been wondering about this, which is one reason its still in the box.

Yep.

It is leased.

To "own" an HR20... it is around $800

D* should have an option to buy the recvers, there are alot of people that hate the whole leasing crap. Its a slap in the face, epsecially to thoese who are misslead into thinking they are 'buying' the unit.

So even the purchases from BB and CC are leases, or am I completely confused?
Even "purchases" from BB and CC are leases.

Yup, leased. Owned price you can purchase from D* is like $749 plus the S&H and tax

Since March 1 2006 all directv receivers are leases. No matter where you buy them. Yes some retailers will sell you an owned box but they aren't for $49/99 or 299, those are lease upgrade prices.

There is nothing misleading about it. You can purchase any receiver you want to from D* just ask and be prepared to pay over $800 for an HR20. Your not going to get out of the 2 year commitment its still a programing commitment. All leasing does is provide a way for those who can't afford to pay for the total purchase price a chance to have the big gadgets. Your still going to pay $4.99 a month regardless unless its your only receiver the only difference is at the end of your time with D* you return the receiver. This is not like the old car lease's that everyone compares it to heck I even jumped on the old car lease's and got screwed, it just taught me to read the contract and make dang sure I understand everything there is about it before I sign up. Best Buy and others sell leased receivers ONLY!

In the time frame (October 06) I got the HR20-700 it was very misleading. There was no mention of the system being a lease, via there webpage. I first found this out when the installer handed me a lease agreement. This of course after the unit was installed and activated. I was pissed, very pissed, not at the installer but D*. When I got on the 'list' there was no leasing mentioned, in fact it said own not lease. Even went back to the sight to see if I missed some thing, and no I did not it was still the same, in fact other recvers where also not listed as being a lease at the time. I also was not told of this 'lesae' when I called D* for the install. So yes for me it was very misleading.

To add to my anger, the installer disconnected my other receiver that was working before the new dish, and did not reconnect it. A call to D* and another half day taken off work, the other receiver was reconnected, but did not work with the new dish. D* offered another 'leased' receiver, I wasnt going to go there so I just had the old Tivo reconnected it worked with the dish so... That was the end of that.

After that and a untold ammount of billing errors from this upgrade. I am very upset with D*. That is how I found this sight and got to see masses here venting about the problems with the HR20-700, and D* other new problems. If it wasn't for the last four years of exelant servace, I would not have kept the HR20, or accepted the lease.
