Having more and more issues with "searching for signal" when switching channels. If I go into view satellite signal strength and switch tuners and satellites it works fine for a day or so.

I'm also getting more and more issues with shows apparently recording, showing as full length but when I go to play them I immediately get "do you want to delete?" prompt as if the recording finished playing.

Oh, and it seems to lose video resolution settings every few days. I have only 1080i checked in settings and 1080i format selected, TV will go black with no sound, I turn off receiver and back on and settings are back to 480p and only 480p is checked in settings. I reset to 1080i and it's fine for a few days.

Sure wish you could get shows to record specific time slots instead of it always choosing the first time slot when recording a series.:(

You can do a "manual" record just like a VCR and choose the start and stop time and what days of the week you want to record.

I am having the same issues, including Olympic recordings on NBC and NBCSN. My HR20 is getting long in the tooth. I even added an external HD, but if it gets worse I will have to call D.
Anybody know how to get a free AM21 if I get a replacement HR2x?

I recently replaced an HR20-700 due to a failing tuner. I simply asked them about losing OTA capability, told them I needed it for when we had severe storms, and they sent me an AM21 for free, without me asking for a freebie.

Here is a followup to my issue. I called D, and first mentioned that my dish was very rusty and ugly, and also that my HR20 was failing. They sent a tech out the next day. He replaced the dish, figured out that the Hr20 was bad, and replaced that with a brand new HR24.
Works great, no more problems. I lost all my old movies that I recorded, but I will just repopulate the list.
Now I need to call D and get a free AM21 Monday.

These are typically issues regarding the failure of a multiswitch, either standalone or in your antenna. That said, it is the DVR/STB that sends the DC voltage commands to the switch that allows it to do what it does, so if the DVR/STB is sending out intermittent, weak, or otherwise faulty signals, or if the wiring is degraded or faulty, the switch will not always switch when it should, even if it is in perfect working condition.

Bottom line, it could be the STB/DVR, the wiring, or a faulty switch, but statistically it is most likely a switch, still could be the wiring, and is least likely the STB/DVR, generally speaking.

This problem is definitely in the DVR/STB, and since it is having issues, that changes things, and may push the earlier argument more towards the DVR being the issue.

You have two main choices here:

1. Replace the DVR. With luck, this will solve your other (part one above) issues and will mean you do not need to have a service call to check wiring and switch integrity. But this means you lose all recordings and are not sure you have even fixed the part one problems. Plus you are out $21 for shipping.

2. Go ahead and schedule the service call. With luck, this will solve the problem all at once. If it is determined that the DVR is not at fault, you save your recordings and shipping costs. But how much cost and hassle will the service call itself be? And they may suggest a new DVR anyway, and that may not even fix the problem. Techs can't solve intermittent problems reliably because if it works there is no smoking gun, and the definition of intermittent is that some times it works.

It's dealer's choice, but were it me, I would try #1 first. If that does not work, there is a much greater chance of a service call being a good fix, because the incertainty of the DVR has been already removed from the equation at that point, which leaves switch or wiring issues. What you choose is sort of dependent on how each fits your comfort zone.

Good luck, post back

ive got 2 hr20-100s, 1 is an original that i got installed 4 years ago. that receiver cannot get hd channels unless there is something recording. the 2nd receiver was a replacement last year. I can watch hd channels on thus receiver but anything that records is blank and all my old recordings will not play. just curious what the problem could be, directv cant get a tech out til next week and im wonder what to expect since i assume given the receiver test shows a dish allgnment issue that its something with the dish and not the receivers..
