This is my first post to this forum. Just got DirecTV to install a new dish and HR20. Compared to my old Sony SAT-HD300 Receiver, the HR20 is slow as molasses when trying to navigate around in the channel guide. Just can't put up with it. The Sony responds instantly: I don't think I can keep this thing if it's going to be this slow. Is this everyone's esperience with this?

Sometimes, it's response is surprisingly nimble: bringing up the guide or the myVOD.

Othertimes it's just a little too slow: Scrolling around in the guide, myVOD

Sometimes it just locks up: when it goes to my To Do List. Someday I'll re-format and hope the problem doesn't happen again.

In general... all the DVRs are slower then then their non-DVR counter parts.

So yes... the HR20 is slower to respond then my Zenith SAT-520 was (which was the cousin of the HD300).

The channel guides are slower...

One way to speed it up, is to setup a favorites with the channel listings that you want to see.

Thanks for the responses everyone. A DirecTV tech had me reset the receiver; things are abour 20% faster. He also suggested reformatting the hard drive. This, along with understanding about having to have lower expectations compared to non-DVR devices will most likely allow me to live with it.

Really, how fast does it respond when you tell it to record something?

I was wondering if the poster was referring to the HR10.

I've had the HR20 for a few months now and it has become much slower in the past two or three weeks. Scrolling through the menu is terrible. It's not my only complaint but it far out weighs the rest.

The 10-250's guide was MUCH faster.
I can scroll up and down 10x faster ont eh 10-250 that on the HR20.
Why does it pause when you click channel up or down to change guide pages? There is a 3 second pause before it switches. I've asked this bfofre and assume it's normal for this machine to be that slow?

No, that is not normal at all for the HR20.

Something is definitely wrong with your HR20. My HR20 is WAY faster in every way than my 10-250. That is one of my biggest complaints about the 10-250, WAY WAY too slow. I find the HR20 to be very quick in comparison.

I know my 6 year old Sat-t60 guide is much much faster than the hr20. I don't understand why developers don't spend more time making their interfaces more responsive. There are other thing in the hr20 that are faster, but the guide is the thing I use the most followed by the now playing (tivo) or myVOD (hr20)

The hr20 is a half a decade more advanced that is forever in high tech time, I just don't get why this things guide is not snappy fast.

Is the T60 a DVR?

Are you comparing a more complicate piece of equipment to a mere reciever?
The Sony T60 was a wonderful TiVo D* receiver. Mine is fully hacked with a large drive. My HR-20 is slower to Page Up or Down in the Guide or MyVOD. When I page up or down on the T60, it does not try to animate the shift up. The T60 just redraws the the new screen once. The HR20 redraws the screen at least 10 times to give you a pretty animated page up or down effect. I am told that the HR20 deliberately pauses for an instant on each of the intermediate screens so that the viewer can enjoy the animation effect!

I wish we could turn animations off so that the HR20 would be more responsive in Guide and MyVOD. I will make this note under the wishlist.

YES! I wish they would get rid of them. Or at least make it an option so the people who like the slow, pretty animations can have them and the rest of us can browse faster.

Picky, picky, picky ... next thing you know you'll want them to get rid of those lovely flashing blue LEDs - they are so useful :kickbutt:

It is an idea only a gui designer or internally focused marketing team could love. The t-60 guide rocks, best D* guide I have every used.

Totally agree on the animation thing, it needs to go or have an option to turn it off, I made a post about it a few days back http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=69243&highlight=animation

Blitz69, yep it was one of the first DirecTiVOs. IMO D* should of gone to school on this box. Some of the menus became slower over time with software updates, but the guide was and is fast and crisp.
