HR20 Series Link - Max 1 Recording/Day?

701 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  dvelleco
Hi guys,

Just got my HR20 last week, and so far so good...no problems! I have a quick question regarding Series Link.

Is there any way to cap the number of recordings of a show to 1 per day?

This mainly applies to some of my kid's shows which will air several times in one day. There is really only a need to record one per day at the most. More than that, and the chance for recording conflicts with other shows (like mine!) greatly increases.

Thanks,
Dave

Not really. From what we've been told on here, the HR20 will not re-record a show if it is already present on the hard drive. I still am waiting for hard evidence of that though.

You could always set up a manual record instead of a SL for those shows.

Dave,

The New HR20 Tip & Tricks! Now with OTA Setup & Use has this workaround under Manual Recordings with the steps to do it. There are 45 other undocumented tips there.

Take care,

I'm going to need to look at that. I set a series record for "Countdown" on MSNBC. If I do not manually delete the second show and if there are no conflicts with other shows that I have already addressed, it will record both shows a night, four hours apart. That aggravates me. The HR10 did not do that.

I'll look at the tips and tricks again. Thanks.
My results are different. Mine won't record 2 instances of the same program in the same day. Naturally, I'm not surprised that some do and some don't. That seems to be the most consistant thing about the HR20, they're inconsistant.
Thanks for all the info everyone. I will check out the Tips & Tricks document Craig mentions....
A big part of why series link (and season pass on the Tivo's, since they use similar data) records more than you'd like is the networks do not uniquely identify episodes. If every unique episode were given their production ID or some other number (original date?) the DVRs would know if they are recording duplicates. Without that information, they hopefully err on the side of recording more rather than less.

So its not the fault of the HR20, or the R15, R10, Tivo S2, etc. We need to put pressure on the networks to give more episode data into the stream.

Cheers,
Tom
I just picked up a HR 20 from Best Buys and was eager to hook it up when I searched for some reviews and 90% of them are negative.

After reading that this thing is mostly a piece of junk I am tempted to just return it to Best Buys and switch over to Dish Network which seems to have a more stable unit. However, I still have about 6 months on my Directv contract and probably get penalized for switching.

What do you guys think I should do? Dare and open the box and hook it up and see what happens or just return it and wait a few months and see how things develope?

I really want HD Quality, that's what I have my 60 inch Sony LCD for ;)

Most of us using it DON'T think it's a piece of junk. I'm very pleased with ours after seven weeks-plus. Could it be better? Sure. D* has updated the software about five times since we've had ours (only 3 of those have been national so far) and it gets better-behaved with each update for us. Right now I'm watching Sunday Night Football in HD on my NBC local and wouldn't go back to my old Tivo for anything.

Yep...I totally agree. I have had mine for only a week, but have used it pretty extensively. I also have an HR10-250, and prefer the HR-20. So far, it has been solid. No lock-ups...no missed recordings. I have actually ordered a 2nd HR20 from Best Buy.

I should even clarify my question regarding capping the number of recordings for series link (SL). I was actually referring to same show name, but different episode titles. For example, several different episodes of Dora the Explorer (my youngest daughter's favorite) may air in the same day. The HR20 correctly records them all because they are different episodes and I picked an SL recording. I was just wondering if there was a feature to cap that at a max per day. It would be nice ( I think one episode per day is enough), but even my goood old HR10-250 Tivo doesn't have that feature either. The work-around is to do a manual recording, which would be a pain because you would have to set it up for each day. I think I will just live with the extra episodes.

Thanks,
Dave:)
