1. Just had my HR20 installed. Should you just leave it "ON" (with blue lights on) or shut it off, which puts it into standby mode?

2. I have the IR remote and it takes about 15 minutes for it to accurately work. When I first turn on the unit the remote repeats buttons or I have to get within 2 inches of the sensor input. After about 15 minutes it works fine. Will switching to the DTV RF remote fix this problem.

3. I kept my old 3LNB dish(did not install the 5LNB dish) with the hopes that the new Slimline dish will be lighter in weight. Am I losing anything by doing this at this point in time? I already have OTA local HD channels.

Thanks for your responses.

1. Doesn't make any difference really, except that putting the unit into standby allows it to do its internal "housekeeping" chores immediately rather than waiting for several hours of inactivity. Even with the blue lights off, it's always on internally unless you pull the plug (just like Tivos are).
2. You might very well have a bad remote. I've never experienced anything like that with my HR20 remote or my Harmony universal remote.
3. As long as you don't want/need MPEG4 locals via satellite, you're not losing anything with the 3-lnb dish.

All DVR's are made to be just left on. HR20 is no different. Only way to actually shut it off is to unplug the power cord.

Standby mode is up to you. All it does is turn off the LED's on the front and cut the video and audio outputs. It's still on and doing it's thing.

As LameLefty noted, going into standby allows it to begin its internal housekeeping functions quickly instead of waiting for a longer period of inactivity while left on.

I'm like you, however. I leave mine on all the time. It's never been turned off or unplugged. I've had to do one red button reset in the 9 weeks I've had the HR20 and that was directly tied to last Thursday evening's Ch 95 poison pill (during the NFL Network's HD Football game). My channel changing slowed down to a crawl, and stayed that way. The following morning I did the red button reset and the speed of channel changing returned.

1)Why leave the unit on if you can standby? Makes no sense to leave it on.

2)You have a bad remote my friend.

3)You will need the 5 LNB dish by the end of next year to get the HD channels as they will be moved to MPEG4. Also, the AT9 dish is sweet. I love mine and I get awesome an signal.
