I've been using the HR20 for about a month on my secondary set with no issues. Well that all ended last night.

It was extremely windy here in the DC Metro area and I went to watch TV at about 10:30 and I got "Searching for signal on Satellite in 1; Searching for signal on Satellite in 2" on ALL 4 of my units (HR20-700, HR10-250, R15, DVR80).

So, while I was on the phone w/ D*, I figured I would try and watch the Penn State game that I had recorded earlier that day. I get to the list of programs and immediately notice that it says there is 100% space available even though all of my programs are in the list. Uh-oh! So, I select the game and press play. Complete system freeze-up. I also notice that the date-time in the upper left corner says "Friday 7:07PM". I hit the red button to reset and after the unit times out searching for satellite signal, I go back into the list and select a different show - same thing - system lock-up.

So after I troubleshoot the no signal issue - they think it's a bad transponder, but I think it's awful suspicious that this happened on the windiest day of the year - I tell them about not being able to playback a previous recording. According to them this is a bug in the software that will be fixes by the end of the year???

So the long and short is that you cannot play back previous shows if you don't have a sattelite signal. Great. Just Great. So not only am I without live TV until Wednesday 11/1 (so much for being on the "A-list"), but I can't play back what I have recorded either. My god! My wife and I are going to have to read a book or talk to each other! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! LOL! :D

ps. Does anyone in the Washington DC/Northern VA area know of a company that does "emergency" work on Sunday? I don't wanna miss my Superfan and would be willing to pay, especially since I already got a nice credit last night. Thanks.

So, you're supposed to hope that you don't run into a loss of signal (for an extended period of time) for the next TWO MONTHS, or put up with not being able to play a previously recorded program? Absurd. This bug should be fixed in the very next release (after this coming week, assuming there is one)!

That bug and the annoying loss of signal (short) while watching a recording brings up a notice that covers a significant part of the screen for the entire time you ARE able to watch your recording. Just plain silly. This is one of those bugs that should NEVER have gotten by the very first release..it is an ENTIRELY PREDICTABLE set of conditions. I sometimes wonder if the people responsible for the designing and writing the code (could be two different groups, of course) ever use the units (or intended to).

That said, I haven't had this bug (yet) and in the month I've been using the HR20, I have had very few and only minor problems. (No MPEG-4/HD-Locals, which in terms of experiencing bugs, appears to be an advantage) On balance, I'm very pleased with the HR20.

You do, however, have my sympathy and I share your disappointment in this inept bit of coding.

i ran into the same thing a few days ago when it was raining really hard here in houston. luckily it eventually stopped and my signal returned, but until i rebooted it 3 or 4 times the next day, i was still unable to watch anything live or recorded. i am quickly losing patience with this box. hopefully more fixes will be out soon.

Thankfully I've got it resolved for now.

I had a friend of mine who has a ladder and is mechanically inclined come over this morning. After about a minute on the roof, he discovered the problem. One of the bolts that secures the leg supports had sheared off and the dish was tilted backward slightly. He was able to get it back where it belongs and put in a replacement bolt and I'm back in action. :)
