Doesn't matter if it's on or in standby, when it is told to update it will

Since the unit is really on even though it looks "off" it should download and install the update as expected.

As long as you don't have a recording scheduled during the update period.

I just got my HR20 installed this afternoon and it automatically updated with FA. Does anybody know when the Atlanta area will be updated with the 0B? Thanks.

It's already coming down on the West coast, so if we're lucky, it might come down to Midwest tonight or tomorrow, then East the next ...so perhaps Friday for you, Thursday for Midwest, given typical delays. Worst case, next week. All guesses, based on how things came out last few times, and the relative "good condition" of the national release coming down now.

Yes, regardless it will come. But it will likely come slightly sooner (like a few minutes or hours ) if your unit is in standby mode (off). That way the scheduler inside "knows" you are not watching TV.
