you might be having issues with your HR20's, mine is really pretty zippy. I would suspect that you may have failing hdd's or something. I have long since replaced the original hdd with a big external.
HR20 with Genie?
I just got off the phone with DTV and am having one of my ancient HR20s replaced with the Genie.
They would not provide me C31s, however, because I have 2 other HR20s in the house and they say it would be best to just use those.
Is this true? I see all this stuff about using the Genie with the H25 so I assume the HR20 will still work to play content from the Genie just like any other shared DVR.... but since I have not seen it called out I wanted to make sure.
If I'm going to be stuck with a Genie that can record all these shows but can't be watched from other TV's with my equipment, I'll call and cancel my order.
Note: My HR20s are slower than dirt. I just could not take it anymore, which is why I called to upgrade. The Genie fixes one location but I assume isn't going to fix the others, which will still be locally slow and typically slow accessing content over the network. Maybe I'd be better off getting a couple free H25s and sending back my HR20s?

Whole Home will work find between the HR20's and the HR34.
A number of people have found that they don't have to return the Hr20's. If that's the case with you, you might grab the 25s, and retain the 20s but deactivate them.
The '34 plays fine with the other DVRs.

By now, all installers should remember the 8-tuner limit per SWiM16 leg, but there's nothing wrong with you reminding 'em when they're at your home.
I had held off on upgrading because I kept hearing the HR20s were still a decent box, but after the last update they really do seem to have slowed down. The drives are all original, so quite old.
After reading this I'm wondering if I'd be better off just upgrading the drives in these vs. buying the 34.
My main goal is to have a snappy receiver. There is nothing more frustrating than pushing buttons and having to wait... the features of the 34 are nice, but is it worth another 2 years of DirecTV and a few hundred $. (they would not give me a free one)
I'd rather have the fastest receiver available in our 2 main viewing locations and don't care if other areas in the home are slower.

I have not had any real issues to speak of having moved my HR20 back to the bedroom and hooking it up to my old Sony 27". I mainly use it as a backup now, but still have several series to watch off of it. It came in handy a couple of weeks ago when the HR34 recorded 2hrs of nothing instead of the Amazing Race. Watched it in the living room off of the HR20 with no problem - minimal lag in starting the show up was all.
You have been with DTV since 1994 and couldn't negotiate a free HR34? That's disconcerting - I was an early adopter (Sept. 1994) and have a current configuration similar to yours. I'm preparing to upgrade my system this fall. I haven't called them for anything since 2007, so I'm hoping for a low cost conversion.
