HR21-100 0X235 as of last night....

Just bought this unit last night at Best Buy, brought home, set up, with only one RG6 cable in(haven't had time to run other yet), called DirecTV, and had them to activate.

All seemed ok, that is, the channels came on. After I got off the phone, I found that most of my HD Channels are not coming through. I have TNT(245), ESPN(206), ESPN2(209), and Discovery HD(281) and maybe one or two others, but the rest of my HD package are not being listed in my favorites. I have rebooted by pushing the reset, but no help.

Also, I do not like that when I change between channels, it takes several seconds for the channel to appear after making several flashes of color, and it appears to do this only with those HD channels that I receive. It seems to me that I had a similar problem once before with an H20 receiver, and a software upgrade fixed the problem.....can't remember for sure.

I will be making a call to DirecTV here shortly, but was wondering what everyone here thinks could be my problem....

Do you have the BBC attached? IIRC the channels listed are MPEG-2. All of the new channels require the BBC to be attached.
1. The guide takes a while to pull down in its entirety. How long has it been since you activated?

2. Turn 'Native Mode', in the HDTV setup menu, off.
I activated last night, and did a reset this morning. I put the BBC that came with the HD DVR, but I can try swapping it out with the other that came with it.

I changed the Native to off, I will swap out the BBC, and do another reset.....
What is the purpose of turning native mode off?
Native Mode on means the television and the DVR attempt to interrogate the signal to display it in its broadcast format (480/720/1080) each time the channel is displayed.
When Native Mode is off, the signal is displayed in whatever format you preselect, saving the need to interpret each time. For example, I have Native Mode off and leave the format at 1080i; the hardware handles the conversion from other formats if necessary and Im left with smooth channel changes.

Uhhh!, I don't know.......

However, pardon my ignorance, but I may have discovered the problem, and you guys can explain what happened.

I did swap out the BBC with the other one this morning, and went back in and did another satellite set up.

While looking around, I realized that my receiver receiver was set up as a 3lnb dish, when I remembered, that it had been a 5lnb set up before. Now, last night, before I called DirecTV, it would not set up as a 5lnb, and kept failing(I tried it twice). So, I figured that I must have been mistaken about it being a 5lnb, so I set it up as a 3lnb, and it worked. I haven't tried putting the other BBC in, but maybe it was bad.......???

Please, do not throw insults my way.......
No one here will throw insults your way if I have anything to do with it.

If you have a 5LNB dish, you should set it up for that. If you tell the DVR you have a 3LNB dish, you will not get the new HD channels.

If satellite setup is failing for the 5LNB dish you may have a dish aiming issues or a problem with the dish itself... unless you actually have a Phase III dish. If that's true you'll need to get it replaced.

Thanks Stuart Sweet, and to all the others that reponded. I don't know why it wouldn't set up last night, but after running the satellite setup again this morning, it recognized the dish as a 5lnb, and I am back in business(I did swap out the BBC with the other). All my HD channels are showing up.

The changing of channels is slow with this DVR. I guess maybe a future software update??
The DVR does change channels more slowly than a standalone receiver, that's true. Also many people report slower performance for the first day or so while the receiver is setting up guide data and other internal processes.

Be careful turning native off. If your TV has better processing than the HR20 (and you want the best picture regardless of the extra milliseconds) then native should be on. All you need to do is record shows in SD, HD 720 and 1080, then view them with native on and off to see what's best. In my case, since I am using Pioneer Elite plasmas there is no contest, native must be ON for me so the Pioneer does the scaling. As noted, the down side is a slightly slower channel change but if there is little/no difference for you then native can be off.

My SD channles look much better with Native On. My TV allows me to customize the picture setting for each resolution detected. Paused a race I recorded on ESPN classic and switched between native on/off. The difference in PQ was drastically better with the native on due to the customized setting.
