HR21-100 Please Help!!!

819 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  DSSJunkie
I have been having this issue since i got my HR21 about a week and a half ago, and after reading about others that have had this same issue i figured that i would post.

I have many other recivers in the house and all the signal levels on all other recivers are 89+. The HR21 is about 20% lower than the rest on tuner 1 and 30% less on tuner 2. I have swapped the BBC, Lines, Ran new lines from the dish, staggered aoutputs on the LNB all to no avail. when i swapped the BBC the levels stabalized in the 90's but within an hour the levels dropped again.

I am thinking that it is time for a swap but just wondering if there was anything else that i might have missed or forgot to check. I don't think that it is a bad LNB or multiswitch because all of the other recivers are working fine...

Thanks for the help in advance!

Have you tried swapping this receiver into an existing location with two RG6 runs to compare the readings from that locations normal receiver?

That would prolly be your best indicator of a bad IRD
Yeah i gave that a try last night with the same results. What i did was place the reciver by a window and ran two lines through the window from the multi switch to the reciver and tested all the outputs. Still same issue. it is just weird like i said that all the other recivers are fine!

Sounds like a bad receiver, call D* for a replacement
Thanks for the help! I am going to give them a call when i get home from work. I just didn't want to miss a step somewhere because it was a new reciver. Out of the HR21 series which are the most reliable? I know i don't have a choice in what i get, Just wondering?
It is known that the HR21-100 units many times read the signal strength lower!

No reason to get a replacement IMO if it is working fine as it is just a poor signal strength reading, it should work fine as others have reported!
I have signals between 59-69 on the 101, on tuner 2, you don't think that this will contribute to rain fade.

Have you tried swapping the BBCs around from the other good receivers. Also, when you put the BBCs on take a 7/16 open end wrench and make sure they are snugged down completely. Sometimes your fingertips can't generate enough torque to bottom it completely. They have a short connector with a short stinger, so it's important to make a good connection. (Not tire lug tight, snug, you know what I mean.)
I replaced the BBCs with new ones that i ordered off the website. Like i said earlier in the thred when i did this the levels jumped to the 90's but with in an hour back where they were at before. No clouds in the sky no storms, it just puzzels me? If the reciver is just giving inaccutate readings thats one thing but if it has sub par tuners that is another. I just don't want it to start going out every five minutes this winter!!
Well, you could either wait it out or just contact Directv and have them send you a new one then I guess.
This forum is a great place to ask questions!! As usual great advice, Thanks all!

I called D* the CRS told me that this was an issue with a few of the -100 they are going to send a replacement. Again thanks for the help
I had the exact same problem and an installer came out Tuesday to look at mine. Here is what he did. Replaced LNB, changed coax cables to the 2 middle links and changed BBC's. My signal strength on 101 is now the same. Now sure exactly what was wrong or what fixed it but that is what he did. D* didn't charge me for the service call since I just had the system installed last Sat.

Like one of the previous posters has sad, this is an issue on some of the hr21-100 and mine as well. I have done nothing to correct mine since I don't have any signal loss and the only time I loose signal is on a very heavy rain. I have taking the bbc's off and the signals rise a good 20 points. I did order new bbc's but haven't installed them yet because I don't have any issues. My lower sigs where on the 110 and 119 sat's.

Your thred was where i got the idea to alternate the wires.:) I am glad that the installer could fix your problem.

I guess i will wait to see what they send me. if it is a refurb i think that i am just going to send it back to them and keep my current reciver, since it seems like many people have this issue and are not having problems with there service.
