I have had my HR21 for about a week now and just a few days ago I have started having numerous problems with it.

1) I have had to do 3 restarts with the red button (after complete lockups where no buttons responded) within the past two days.

2) I had two blank recordings yesterday.

3) There was two missed recordings this morning. They are still in to do list even after time has passed. After a reset with the red button one of the missed recordings started recording in the middle of the show.

So my question is what should I do? Would it do me any good to call Directv and try to get a swap out? (I ordered it straight from Directv if that makes a difference.)

Recordings that run for the duration of the show but are black or gray usually indicate signal problems. Signal issues can also cause lock-ups, especially if they are intermittent. I know this may not sound entirely intuitive, but the HR2x series seems to have issues with bad signals that can cause the symptoms you describe.

My advice would be to check signal strengths to make sure you don’t have issues on one tuner. If you do, then try methodically swapping sat feeds and then BBC’s to isolate the exact cause. If it always stays with one tuner no matter what, then it could be a defective HR21. If not, then you probably have a bad BBC, cable, connection, multiswitch or LNB.

This seems to be a defective HR21 because I have another HR21 in the living room and it is working fine and doesn't hasn't had any problems.

I've checked the signal strength and they have been good every time.

Could still be signal issues related to the problems in the cable runs, lnb or multiswitch.

Have you tried swapping the 2 HR21's to see if the problem follows the unit or stays in that room?

it still may not be the HR21, it could be the BBC's. have you tried swapping the one's from the working HR21 to the one your having issue's with yet?
