I hope someone here may be able to help me with this. I will give you direct tv installer tech answer shortly.
I recently had a HR20-700 hooked up to a JVC HD-ILA Projection tv through HDMI and it worked fine. I recently gave this tv to my daughter and she has a HR21-200 with latest update and the HDMI will not work with this receiver. I tried another brand new 1.3 cable with same results.
I called direct tv and went through the normal red button reset that did not help.
They will send out a tech to check it out.
Tech told my daughter that this tv is too outdated (the tv is about 2-1/2 years old) and it will work with the older receivers like the HR20 or H20 but not the newest receivers.
My daughter said how about trying a different box and he said it won't help but maybe buying a really expensive hdmi cable may work?
Does this sound like the correct answer?
Thanks in advance to anyone with any input.

That sounds like a load of hooey. The HR21 uses the same HDMI spec as the HR20.

How is HDMI not working?

Hi Stuart, thanks for the responce.
I also think it's a bunch of hooey myself. With the HDMI the picture comes on momentarily then goes to black screen for a second or 2. Then the screen may turn a greenish or pinkish color and the picture comes on momentarily again for a second or 2 and then it starts this all over again. For the second or 2 it's on the picture looks good. Component works fine but this tv has 2 component inputs and both are being used for a WII console and dvd player. Sure would like the hdmi for the HR21 to work.

Hi larcar, the HDMI is the very same and you do NOT need the most expensive cables to do HDMI interface, in fact the one that comes with the DVR should be more than satisfactory.

What TV set does your daughter have?

On occasion, not with my HR21-200, but with HR20-700 and H20-600 I had to reset both sides of the HDMI cable to get my sound to work 5.1, but I have always gotten video. I have both a Sharp Aquos (HDMI) and a Sharp projector (HMDI to DVI).

There was software issues a while back, but nothing that didn't allow HDMI to work in some form or another. Does it not work at all?

Try cycling through the resolutions ..

.. also, as smiddy stated, the cable that comes with the DVR is fine. There is no need to go buy an ultra-expensive cable and try it out as it is unlikely to make any difference.

Hi smiddy, It is a JVC-HDila projection tv that worked fine when I had it with the H20 and Hr20 receivers. I gave it to my daughter and she has the HR21-200 that does not work. I know expensive cables are not the answer!

Hi Doug,
This tv will support all resolutions and I tried them all with no change. I use inexpensive HDMI cables on all my equipment at home and everything works great. I still beleive it's an issue with that receiver on hdmi out.

Stuart, there's specs but how they are implement by the vendors can be different. I had a HR20-700 and HR21-200 both connected via HMDI to a Sony. Never had any problems with the HR20 but the HR21 every now and then would say there was a problem with the audio stream and stop playing audio. Now is the problem with how DirecTV or Sony implemented the specs, who know but it does show that it could be the HR21.

OK, how about just using a component connection to get around the problem and just keep checking back on the HDMI connection in case D* send out a software release that might fix it?

That is how she is using the tv now. Problem is the tv only has 2 component inputs and they have a WII console and dvd with component out. So right now the dvd is disconnected. The tv is still hooked up to hdmi and I will look here at DBSTalk for a new software release for this HR21 and then try it again.
Thanks for your input.

Seems to me like a cheap upscaling DVD player with HDMI would both be useful for her new HD dtv and solve the problems you are currently having by allowing you to use component for the HR21 and the dvd player on the hdmi.

There is no reason why the HR21 shouldn't work with the tv but unfortunately these types of weird incompatibilities are still far too common with HDMI.

The Wii only displays in SD anyway so why not use the Composite cables that came with it to connect to the TV and then use the other Component i/p on your tv to plug in the DVD player.

Yes an inexpensive dvd player is an option. Might go that route.

Seems to be a worthwhile upgrade of the Wii picture quality using the component instead of composite. May go the upscaling dvd player route.

Using component cables from the wii gets you 480p while composite will be limited to 480i. It is a small thing but it does help especially if your TV doesn't do de-interlacing very well.

Yo, check up here a second.

Was the HDMI output on your daughter's HR21 ever used before you gave her the TV ?

Did you or the tech try a different box for her HR21 ?

Have you tried swapping the HDMI cable ? Yours for hers.

Or another option is a component cable multiswitch. You can get them for like $40 so that all she has to do is press a button on the front of it to switch inputs to the TV.

The only issue in using the component video output is that someday (and that may not be too far in the future), it will only give you 480p. The HR2x has the ability to downgrade HD content on the component outputs when requested by the content owners. This is a DRM copy-protection issue. When that happens, only HDMI will give you an HD picture, and then only if the TV and HR2x “play nicely together.”

No her previous tv was older and only had component.
It worked when I had it with my H20 then HR20.

Yep swapped it with a brand new version 1.3. Which worked on my new Sony here at home.

Tech said from experience it would not help to replace receiver.
He would not just try it!
He blamed it on tv being older (2-1/2 years old) and not compatible with new HR21 receiver? Suggested buy a expensive cable to try. NOT!
