I just bought a new Hr21 and wanted to find out if using it vertically will cause any problems? I don't have the space to set it down in the horizontal position and was hoping that turning it vertical would not cause any issues or undue wear. Anyone know anything about this at all?

Thanks.

Also, is there a product that allows me to connect wirelessly to directv instead of using the phone line? A link would surely be appreciated.

I would first chose to try to put the top vents holes so they are exposed is possible....if the unit is sandwiched where either orientation covers the top vent holes then since HDD is on one side I would have that side up so as heat rises it goes out of the box instead of across other components. Perhaps no big deal but given that your upper vent holes are covered up its the only concern I would have.

To answer your second question - if you already have a home network running with a cable modem/dsl/whatever, you can just jack an ethernet cable into the back of your HR21...

Just make sure that the fan isn't fighting against a blockage or convection to get the heat out of the box. Reducing the effectiveness (or increasing the load) of the fan will cause it to run faster (louder) and ultimately make the box less stable.

Note that the flow of air is different for different receivers, so you need to research carefully to find out how your version of the box cools.

Wireless game adapters are a possibility, but wired is usually better. DIRECTV makes available a HomePlug set for a reasonable price that uses your house wiring and it is very easy to set up.
