I have a HR21-700 and noticed that the CBS show "The Unit" does not play in Dolby Digital when viewing it. The guide clearly shows it as a DD show and I have no other issues with other shows not playing the audio correctly. We have recorded 3 shows now this season (2 full episodes and 1 partial due to football) and we have the same issue. The HR21-700 is connected to a Sony STR-DA5300ES AVR which also indicates when its decoding surrounding sound content by lighting up a large blue light on the front panel and it does not light up at all for this shows content. it does for other shows.

Anyone else having this problem? Suggestions on how to resolve?

thanks

I'd suspect the problem originates with your local station. Check with the station engineer to verify if they're sending the dolby signal.

Since you've noted that you don't have problems with other shows, your HR21 is obviously capable of properly playing back dolby signals when received.

This is amazing.....I thought that DD was part of the overall HD picture?
Not necessarily. I have access to two markets and although they may show the same content (primetime programming) one affiliate will have DD 5.1 while the other will just have DD 2.0

I've read where its pretty expensive for the equipment to support 5.1, so depending on what market you're from, the Station may not afford it. I could be wrong but this is what I read the most about this situation.

I've had problems with Dayton's Channel 7 (CBS) with clipping/distortion on the center channel with CBS programming, received OTA, not cable. Receiver is LG LST-3410 HD DVR.

First noticed the problem with the season premier of "The Unit" - terrible clipping/static only on the center channel during high impact moments (shouts, plane take off, car peeling out, etc.). Switched output to stereo (still with the 5.1 input) and still had the noise. I'll have to try plain old stereo out of the LG next time to confirm that only the 5.1 audio is affected.

Same thing happened with the next two episodes. Noted last night that it doesn't happen on commercials or the local news feed.

Also reviewed "Numbers", recorded on Friday, and it had the noise as well.

Check on my TW HD-DVR, which recorded the cable HD signal from Ch7, and neither had the noise.

Called the Ch7 engineer and left a message - haven't heard back. I've watched every episode of Unit and Numbers and never had this problem before. And none of my other OTA HD signals have the problem, only CBS network shows on Ch7 OTA.

Any suggestions on what else I can do? The problem is so severe that it could damage my speakers if I run the volume at any listenable level. Had to turn it down so much last night my wife left to watch it on another TV, and I had to keep riding gain.

That clipping / Static (loud) is what I've gotten in the past from WKRC (Cincinnati) Surprisingly I haven't run into it yet this season, but still no 5.1.

The Unit didn't record because of Football last weekend, so I ended up downloading it (and obviously from another market) as it was recorded in 5.1 which was obvious when we started watching it. It sounded so much better than what I'm used to hearing. I actually considered just downloading the Unit and NCIS so I can get them in 5.1
