I have an HR21 using only 1 line - this is while await getting an SWm/LNB.

There is no problem at all.

What difference does it make in getting 771 on tuner 2?

Tuner 2, with only one line connected, by definition, does not receive a signal.
Therefore, Tuner 2 is telling you there's no signal - the exact thing is should do!

So you miss recordings when the DVR tries to use tuner 2. You have to set the DVR up to only use one tuner (which MIGHT happen automatically with a reboot).

Had another installer tell me with the new software it would just not work with 1 line, kept giving 771 messages.
Thats just the installers sups saying that the reciever won't work. They do that so they don't get a charge back when the customer calls D* because they can't record two shows at once. My sup would tell me that the reciever wouldn't work with one line and I would tell them " but my 2 HR20's have been working fine with one line for 2 years" LOL. They also told me that diplexing OTA will not work on a high def job.

But I do know that it is required by D* for us to install the second line for ALL DVR'S.

I believe with the new software if you go in to the setup. You can tell it that it has only 1 line. Baisically turning off tuner 2.
+1

Yes, you can enable only one tuner on a HR20 or HR21 with the latest software, during sat setup.

I used single tuner DVRs until I installed the SWM.

Can you clarify this. I thought the new software was only for testing, not setup. In other words, you can tell the HR2x with the latest software to only test for one tuner, but the actual setup to single tuner is still done automatically during startup.
