I've been kicking around the idea of adding an external drive anyway.... If I reboot my system enough times, it finally works again for awhile. Would adding an external 2 GB drive restore system reliability? That option would give me some more time to record some shows to DVD that I want to keep by disconnecting the external drive and playing with the internal to get it running. Or, if the internal drive completely craps out, is the unit useless regardless if an external drive is connected?

I did see 1 error message indicating a problem with the hard drive.

Thanks!

That probably would work, but if the receiver is leased why not call DIRECTV and have them replace it?
Thought of that, but if the unit is replaced, I have no chance whatsoever of recording the shows on the flaky hard drive.... I was thinking an external drive would buy me a little time....

If you connect the external drive to the HR22 then the internal drive is disabled, you can't access it, so I don't see that buying you time to copy of to DVD or VHS (or whatever) that's on the internal drive.

I have external drives on other HR systems, so I am familiar with that issue. If I disconnect the external drive, I can get at the internal drive when I have some time to mess with it and attempt to record some of the old shows I want to keep. Since I travel a lot, and use a Vulkano box like a sling box, I need (want) a reliable HR system for the Vukano - hence the question about an external drive working if the internal completely craps out. It basically comes down to keeping a slim chance of recording some of the old shows from the internal drive vs. starting completely over with a new unit from DirecTV.
